Golden Gulag: Prisons, Surplus, Crisis, and Opposition in Globalizing California (American Crossroads) (Volume 21) by Ruth Wilson Gilmore

i loved it - not exactly the best intro to abolition because it can get a little hard to read, but it's an essential for understanding how prisons relate to local political economies. if you want to understand how incarceration is inextricably tied to capitalism, this is the best place to start.
