About the Author

Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky was born in Karevo, Russia. Educated for the army, he resigned his commission in 1848 after the onset of a nervous disorder and began studying music. Along with Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov, he was one of the first to promote a national Russian style of music. show more Mussorgsky first became known for his songs, among them the well-known setting of Goethe's (see Vol. 2) satirical "Song of the Flea" (1879). His masterpiece, however, is the opera Boris Godunov (1874), a wonderful example of his ability to "color" his music. His piano suite Pictures from an Exhibition (1874) is also a standard work in the concert repertoire of today. During the latter part of his life, Mussorgsky sank into chronic alcoholism, and this contributed to an early death. After his death, his friend Rimsky-Korsakov took many of the composer's unfinished pieces and completed or arranged them. Today, the original versions of many of Mussorgsky's works are making a comeback and deserve serious attention. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Part of a series of Japanese books that illustrate famous classical music, A Night on Bare Mountain tells the story of a traveler who is stranded on Bare Mountain. During the night, a blue devil calls upon witches, ghosts, skeletons, and egg goblins to celebrate a great drunken festival. The poor traveler endures the night until the bells of dawn banish the evil spirits.

The story may be familiar to anyone who has watched the "Night on Bald Mountain" section of Disney's Fantasia, but the show more illustrations are much cuter and child-friendlier. The smiling ghosts and skeletons may even be the forerunners of the ubiquitous cute critters that are found on kids' clothes and hipster bags today (think Tokidoki). Like many great children's stories, this book presents danger in a palatable form; in this case, the cuteness of the monsters are reassuring, and all ends well at the end. show less
All pianists use versions in which some sort of transformation is worked with Moussorgsky's materials, and Horowitz is no exception, adding reinforcements of the composer's insufficiently pianistic writing that are, for him, brilliantly successful. If one is conscious, in the end, more of Horowitz than of Moussorgsky, that is in the nature of his pianistic personality. However, the subtly varied statement of the "Promenade" theme through "Gnomus," a fairly incredible "Tuileries," a sardonic show more "Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuyle," to a massive statement of "The Great Gate at Kiev," Horowitz is an interpreter of keen sensibilities and unvarying resource. show less
