Newhall's history is a broad essay written with a firmly modernist point of view. Newhall's concern is art photography, or at least, as he told me, "...why write about photography that is not beautiful?" My answer is the important role that advertising and other genres of photography have played in our history taken more broadly.

This is a rather thin book, but it does discuss Beaumont Newhall as a photographer in more detail that I have seen elsewhere, and although it does not offer deep insight into the man, it does offer a reasonable amount of background information considering that his photographic efforts are less in the creative and more along the lines of advancing photography as an art form. The book includes a small number of his photographs, which tend to be design oriented.
