ספר מדהים למדי. שונה מכל ספר אחר, בוודאי מכל ספר שקראתי בעברית. שונה במבנה שלו, בצורת הכתיבה שלו, במוזיקה שלו ובפסימיות שלו. זה ספר שמתחיל במוות ומתסמיים במוות וביניהם הוא עוסק במוות ובחיים כמסע לעבר המוות. קשה מאוד לקריאה, גם בגלל שאין בו מרווח נשימה אחד במשך 300 עמודים, גם show more בגלל שהוא מדכא וגם בגלל שהוא מודפס על נייר באותיות זעירות ועם זאת מרתק וקה להניח אותו מהיד. הספר מיוחד גם בזה שמצד אחד הוא, כמו ספרו השני של שבתאי, מאוד תל אביבי ומצד שני הוא במדיה רבה אוניברסלי. מדהים מה מביא בחור ישראלי, לכאורה מן השורה, לכאורה עליז וחברמן, לכתוב יצירת מופת פסימית כזאת. הקריאה בספרה של עדנה שבתאי לא עוזרת כלל בפתרון התעלומה. show less

ספר מדהים. כתוב בלי רווחים ובלי נקודות וקשה לקריאה אבל מרתק. תיאור מדהים של דיכאון קליני וכמיהה לאהבה. למרות שהספר מתרחש חלקו באמשטרדם ובלונדון הוא ספר ישראלי מאין כמוהו, יותר נכון ספר תל אביבי וכנעני. נהניתי מאוד לקרוא אותו בשנית.

Past Continuous follows three friends - Goldman, Israel, and Caesar - through their physical and mental meanders through Tel Aviv, discussing its inhabitants, its landscape, and its history. It is considered one of the peaks of modern Hebrew fiction, often compared to the scope of Remembrance of Things Past (which the original Hebrew title, זכרון דברים‎, also nods at). Not only is the novel a literary tour de force, but reading it can also be one, due to its long, complex show more sentences (some spanning several pages), which roam from one topic to another (albeit in a remarkably unambiguous way) linking one character to another, however disparate they seem, as if they are all part of the whole - a commune with every single character a member. The story is about a seemingly endless tangle of family relations (keep a notebook at hand if you want to keep track) and convoluted relationships, their arbitrary feuds replaced by happenstance friendships or love-affairs, all clad in a shadowy existential angst where not much contentment is to be found, or even seriously sought. show less

One of those instances where the writing is amazing, while the main characters are largely unsympathetic (and in one case, thoroughly despicable).
