Under the UNIX operating system, Emacs is an extensible programmer's editor with modes for programming, writing, and the creation of simple drawings. There is also a Windows version of the editor. Emacs is an acronym for Extensible MACroSystem.

There is good news and bad news about Emacs. The good news is that Emacs is the most powerful text editor available. (Math students at Oklahoma State University say that Emacs is the editor that God used to write the source code for the universe.) The bad news is that Emacs is the most difficult to learn and the hardest to use of text editors.

The authors wrote this book so that users can become productive in Emacs within just a few hours. The book emphasizes usability rather than obscure features.

The book includes a handy tear-out quick reference card. The CD-ROM packaged with the book includes: GNU Emacs, NT Emacs, and Cygwin Beta 20.1.
