Short biography
John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, 1st Baron Acton of Aldenham, 8th Baronet, known as Lord Acton, was an English Catholic Liberal historian. In 1895, he was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University. Most of his written work consisted of essays and copies of his lectures. In 1899 and 1900, Lord Acton coordinated the development of The Cambridge Modern History. He served as a Member of Parliament and as an adviser and friend to Prime Minister William Gladstone. In 1865 he married Marie von Arco-Valley, with whom he had four children. He succeeded to the baronetcy in 1837, and was raised to the peerage in 1869.

This project was begun by lord Acton, as a collaborative project, with experts from the academic world of the late Edwardian World. If one is looking for old fashioned political and military history the information is still valuable, and the prose is quite clear, and not overly larded with professional jargon. A good book for the bibliography, and for chapter epigraphs for your own surveys.

(more)

In a series of lectures, 22 in all, from 1895 to 1899, Lord Acton spoke on the French Revolution. These lecture series on the Revolution belong to the 1st phase of the historiography which believed that the event produced tragic results not only for France but also for Europe. The lectures represented one of the most well thought out analysis of this event attempting to present the material objectively. The author insisted that the evidence must speak for itself rather than imposing unrealistic ideas long after the event. He would be proved right ironically by the 2nd phase of historians attempting to use the French Revolution to defend subsequent revolutions. Lord Acton's work is a masterpiece of historiography practiced as it should be. The French Revolution lectures are now forgotten in the current state of history teaching. Perhaps it is time to restore this work to its proper setting.… (more)
