The four Maritime hockey teams that challenged for the Stanley Cup were the Halifax Crescents in 1900, New Glasgow Cubs in 1906, Moncton Victorias in 1912 and the Sydney Millionaires in 1913. In that era, strong teams from different parts of Canada could challenge another top team which was usually from central Canada to a game for the right to hold the Stanley Cup. Since the teams in Ontario and Quebec had deeper pockets, they had most of the best players and thus won these games easily.

Adams writes an interesting history of origins of professional hockey in Canada. His focus is on the Maritimes but to make the history clear, he really starts with the origins of ice hockey and works up to the contribution of the Maritimes to the overall situation. This is a a good brief history of hockey as well as early professional hockey in Canada's eastern provinces. Included are some photographs of the four hockey teams and important individuals who made a major contribution.… (more)
