Short biography
Laura Marie Altom of Tulsa, Oklahoma is the best-selling, award-winning author of twenty-four books. Her works have made several appearances on both the Barnes and Noble and Waldenbooks’ Best-seller lists. This mother of fifteen-year-old twins has spoken on numerous occasions at both regional and national conferences, and teaches reading at a Tulsa middle school. She’s been married to her college sweetheart for nineteen years.

Laura began writing at the ripe old age of 12 when she penned a romance about a model falling for her photographer on a catalogue shoot in St. Thomas. Up until page 42, she faithfully wrote at least a page a day, but gave up when following her own junior high romantic pursuits became more fun than writing about someone else's!

Fast-forward a few years, and Laura met the love of her life her freshman year at the University of Arkansas. Three years and countless toga parties later, Laura and Terry married. Interior design and marriage license in hand, Laura went to work for well-known Arkansas firms, Perry Butcher Architects and Albert Skiles Architects. Among her many projects were schools, churches, corporate offices and over two dozen luxurious private residences. She'd just been handed a dream assignment of designing her first public library when another dream came true — she discovered she wasn't just pregnant, but pregnant with twins! Destiny soon put a twist in Laura's burgeoning career by adding complications to her pregnancy. Two months in, doctors placed her on bed rest. Seven months later, her life forever changed upon getting her first glimpse of precious boy/girl twins. She briefly considered returning to work, but couldn't fight the desire to stay home with her brood.

Two years later, while she loved being a stay-at-home mom, a part of herself had been lost in the process. Then one day, while sorting through dusty boxes, she came across her old romance manuscript. In finding that manuscript, along with her love of writing, fate gave Laura's life another twist, and she's never looked back.

Since then, Terry's engineering career has taken the family to places like Denver, Salt Lake City, and then on to Tulsa, OK, where she now resides. Throughout all of those moves, Laura never lost sight of her ultimate dream — to become a world-renowned romance author. While she's still hard at work on that ""world-renowned"" part of her dream, to date she's sold over seventy romantic short stories and many romance novels. Now, Laura spends her days contentedly writing and chasing after the twins and their menagerie of pets, ranging from a mutt named Sweet Pea, a mini-long-haired dachshund named Cocoa, a black-and-white stealth cat named Domino and a yard full of ducks and geese who live in the backyard pond but would like to live in the house! When night falls, Laura usually finds time to steal a few romantic moments for herself and her own hunky cover stud!

Tanner and Jenny thought they would be soulmates forever. However, life happened and they just weren’t strong enough to withstand the bad times. Tanner was different after the accident in the mine. Jenny didn’t know how to get through to him, all her efforts were rejected and rebuffed and she began to feel resentful, trapped. They both say things they can’t take back and they separate. They wonder what if, but a house fire, a lost baby, Jenny in a coma – it’s all too much, and when Jenny finally awakens from the coma she doesn’t know who Tanner is. It seems hopeless, but maybe that soulmate link is still there, even if tenuous and shaky. Throw in some funny encounters, sweet attempts at dating, a forceful attraction neither of them can fight – and one giant twist – and you’ve got a tender, heartfelt, poignant novella. Thanks to the author for providing a copy of Be My Valentine, Baby. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.… (more)

Beautiful story

Small town romance, challenges along the way, past hurts & insecurities all make for a wonderful journey to finding love. Very interesting book & I found it easy to follow.

Good premise not particularly well done. Gabby is pregnant with his brother's baby. The father, Ben, has run off so the older brother Dane takes over going to Lamaze classes and helping her out when she goes on bed rest. They seem to fall in love and she tells him she wants him and not the brother. That Dane is a real man and Ben is a boy who refuses to grow up but when Ben shows up as she's in labor she dithers and then the book goes on for another hundred or so pages of poorly explained dithering. I wouldn't really have wanted either one of them. She dithered and he didn't fight for her.… (more)

Reading this till the end was really hard for me...I just couldn't connect with this story or its characters at all!

Julie/Ella is running from an abusive husband and the family that didn't believe her story of domestic abuse. She thinks of herself as 'dead inside-out' and she tries her hardest to mask her beauty since it could attract men like Blaine (the abusive asshole)...all very sad, pity though that straight after this explanation she went to a club with her friend Willow -let's not talk about her for the moment- and pretty much blew a guy met just an hour earlier. She didn't finish him 'cause she had a flashback and she run from the stranger but it didn't work. The same stranger, very understanding, tried to console her and offered to take her to his motel...that's the point where -I think- a frightened girl would have said no instead Julie accepted the offer! WHY??
What I liked the least about this character, even more so than her frequent tears and attempts to run away, it's exactly this inconsistency: she describe herself as fearful of men and insecure then she acts in a way that contradict pretty much everything. In the end she's not believable, neither as a victim, neither as a seductress.

Liam is also a contradiction and not in a good way: the Liam from the beginning and the one after the revelation of his status are two very different person.
His reasoning to offering the contract to Julie/Ella makes no sense and the way he talked about it made me want to slap him really hard. The lowest point he reached I think was when he tossed around his credit cards trying to impress Julie...I mean he literally threw them at her! Unfortunately his over the top cockiness makes an appearance (too) many times in the story.
He, like Julie/Ella, had a shitty past to overcome but the author doesn't elaborate about it until the very end and at that point I just couldn't sympathize with him and I also didn't think it justified his general behavior.

As for their relationship, it's a strange case of instant-love/lust/hate where none the above emotions are even a little believable.
Their story, after that first meeting and not quite blow-job, goes on pretty much like this: after the signing of the contract they spend together a day, then he leave for work for a week and doesn't call Julie at all. When he come back she has already run away. They spend apart some months and then they meet again when Willow -Julie's friend- is in the hospital. They finally have sex. Then they have a fight. They apologize to each other and then obviously he profess his love to her and ask her to marry him....ooooookay how could I not feel the love?!

Sorry, I really didn't get those two!
To be honest I couldn't connect even with the secondary characters; Willow in particular I really disliked!

Unfortunately I wasn't able to write anything somewhat positive about this book since it touched pretty much all my bad-buttons, still I'd like to thank again the staff of Random House Publishing Group - Loveswept from NetGalley for the chance to read&review an arc of [b:Control|21854540|Control (Shamed, #1)|Laura Marie Altom|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1397090567s/21854540.jpg|41126716] and I hope they appreciate my honest (but not very positive) opinion about it.
