Alfred Bekker

This is an English translation (apparently the only one) of one entry in Alfred Bekker's German occult detective thriller series about a female descendant of Bram Stoker's famous vampire hunter Abraham van Helsing. I do not know much about this series; apparently it is not a very long series as German occult detective series go (e.g. compared to John Sinclair or Larry Brent) and a bit more low key, but yet one with several entries.

The translation is obviously hastily done and has some obvious errors. E.g. the German pronoun "Sie" can stand for either the third person plural or the second person plural or the second person singular polite. In some cases the translator has chosen to translate it "They" when "You" would clearly better fit the intended reading. Neverthelesss the translation is almost always comprehensible and often fluent.

The story was entertaining but nothing special. The ending was a bit anticlimactic, almost a cop-out, with the most interesting plot threads left unresolved (unless of course they are returned to in later entries in the series, but this seems unlikely, as the entries seem to be mostly self-contained).… (more)
