An excellent little book! Vehicles of all kinds surround the perimeter and invite little hands to turn using their easy-to-grab outlines. There are sparkles, squishes, bumpies, noises, and colors galore! It's a cheerful and easy read full of vehicles your little one already knows and a few (limousine) that are sure to be new too!

This was my grandmother's favorite tale to tell. I didn't get the book until I was an adult.

Vastly simplified condensation of Baum's book (not an adaptation of the iconic movie).
Illustrations are not very good.½

Greately abridged version of Andersen's classic tale, which is one of his longest stories, nearly a juvenile novella, but includes all the essentials.
Illustrations are not exceptional, but are fine for the target audience.

(Dates for most recent reading.)

A lot of skipping rhymes, but very few that I had heard before. I jumped rope in Santa Monica, California when skipping was still in its heyday in the early 60s and there were rhymes that 2nd and 3rd graders did, and rhymes that the older kids would let you do when you got into 4th and 5th grade, a whole gradation of them; rhymes you jumped to, rhymes you clapped patterns to, and rhymes you just chanted. Then, I moved to Wisconsin and jumped to the big girl rhymes there, 7th and 8th grade girls still skipped rope in the 60s. My daughter growing up in Toronto in the 80s had her own set of rhymes. But there are only two rhymes in the book I've ever heard (and we always said eensy ainsy over, not eevy ivy; and our teddy bear spelled GOOD NIGHT, so neither was exactly the same), so I have to assume these are all from England. The book also includes a section on French Skipping, the elastic loop rope tricks that we called Chinese Jump Rope, with diagrams to learn some of the steps, as well as music for the skipping rhymes.

A delightful adaptation of a beloved Aesop fable. Quiet country lane . . . or big, bright, bustling city streets? The Town Mouse and her country cousin discover exactly where they each belong. -- GoodReads

Fantastically ridiculous tale. Again my child loved it mainly as it showed how daft people are (and how fast porridge can move)

My son loved it. The humour of a tiny boy, excitement of his escape and adventure, grossness of animals insides and being killed. Ending with a happy family. Good read.

My child enjoyed this version as it was exciting. All I saw was Jack being daft enough to be conned, then ignored his mum to climb the beanstalk, trespassed in the castle, stole from the giant (3 times) killed the giant leaving a giant widow - then they lived happily ever after as they were rich. I'm still looking for the moral in the tale! At least my son liked it.

Evidently unaware that they are omnivores, Peppa and her brother George consider life as a snail and as a bee on observing that one gets to eat lettuces and the other apparently eats honey. They are indulged in their transmogrifying fantasies by grandparents who, probably uniquely amongst pigs, own a toaster.

Not sure if this is the right edition, but I read this children’s classic a few times in childhood. Reckon the last time would’ve been when I was eight or nine, circa 1983-4.

A must for all youngsters!

This was one of my favorite books to read because it is a classic and has a great story line. Ariel is a kind hearted mermaid who dreams of the life on the land. Her dreams come true and the Prince falls in love with her. Her friends, Sebastian and Flounder encourage and protect her along her journey.

Despite remembering little about this tale now, I think rating it five stars equates to how much I enjoyed this story when I read it numerous times as a child.

I do recall the basic plot for this, however, and in fact remember more about this title than most books read during my pre-teens. Thus, Red Hen every so often asks three other animals if they will help her with such and such a task, to which she always receives the following replies:

"Not I," said the pig.

"Not I," said the cat.

"Not I," said the rat.

I remember the above because even to this day I sometimes quote these responses to myself (in a non-crazy way) when I don't want to do something. Funny how certain unusual aspects of one's childhood last deep into adulthood, perhaps forever.

Possible spoiler coming up, so don't read on if you genuinely want to read this without any clue to the ending.

Anyway, the three animals' answers all change to "I will" at the end when Red Hen asks who'll help her eat her wheat (or something containing wheat), but quite rightfully she tells the others to sod off, though of course she puts it more eloquently than me.

Reckon 1984 would be the last time I read it, but it's hard to be accurate all these years on.

Recommended to anyone aged in single figures or for grown-ups feeling nostalgic.

Despite remembering hardly a thing about this tale now, I think rating it five stars equates to how much I enjoyed this story when I read it numerous times as a child.

I do recall how person after person line up, combining their strength to heave the turnip from the ground. "And he pulled, and she pulled," etc. I also recognised the cover immediately.

Reckon 1984 would be the last time I read it, but it's hard to be accurate all these years on.

Recommended to anyone aged in single figures or for grown-ups feeling nostalgic.
