This two-volume set was advertised as "A Miscellany of popular antiquities in connection with the calendar". The days of the year are each presented with their relevant observance--church festivals, saint's days, holidays, etc., but the seasons are also noted with appropriate festivities such as the maypole dancing or midsummer celebrations. There are many humorous and interesting stories, biographies, historical footnotes, sketches and odd bits of human life and character.

Without doubt the most literate, comprehensive and enjoyable reference work we own. No, it doesn't have anything about nanotechnology; on the other hand, should one desire insight into the strained relationship between Wm Penn (founder of PA) and his long suffering father, one need go no further! The is the British edition, NOT the shamefully revised "American" version which was expressly repudiated by the publishers. (see JRR Tolkien and the ACE ed. of LoTR).

The history of major buildings and streets and other landmarks is given, with quotations from other publications and from the gentry of Edinburgh, including Sir Walter Scott, who recalled the history of the previous hundred years. Some ghost stories and other legends are included. A fascinating read for those who know Edinburgh and enjoy Scottish history.… (more)
