About the Author
Richard Connaughton entered Sandhurst in 1960 directly from school and won a scholarship to study history at Oxford. He has had a varied career, including seven years with the Brigade of Gurkhas in Kowloon where he observed the Vietnam War and the Cultural Revolution in China. He has been an show more instructor at the British Army Staff College in Australia. He resumed his education at Cambridge, where he earned a post-graduate degree in International Relations. He earned a Ph.D. from the Center for Defense and International Security Studies, Lancaster University. He retired from the British Army in 1992 with the rank of Colonel. - Born 20 January 1942. Educated Duke of York's Royal Military School Dover and Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Elected Fellow of the Institute of Management in 1983 and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport in 1989. Undertook Defence Fellowship at the University of Cambridge 1989–90. Elected Research Fellow of the Centre for Defence and International Security Studies (CDISS) Lancaster University in 1992. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil Cantab) in International Relations. PhD in Politics (Lancaster University).
Over 30 years in the British Army specialising in logistics. Seven years were spent in the Far East seconded to the Brigade of Gurkhas. Commanded squadron and regiment in Germany and Northern Ireland. Was instructor at both the Army Staff College Camberley and Australian Command and Staff College. Took early voluntary retirement in 1992 whilst British Army's Head of Defence Studies in the rank of Colonel.
