A phenomenal book. Instead of reading things like the Economist [mainstream], I think people should spend more of their time reading things on the margins. There's only one middle ground, but many extremes. You can find out about the "news" just be hanging out at your local coffee shop or pub. But interesting conversation, and useful action, is inspired by things far outside of the mainstream.

I've been hearing about Dark Mountain for a few years now, but just recently began subscribing. For those not yet familiar with it, it's a biannual periodical out of the UK composed of "uncivilized" art. It's mostly essay, fiction, and poetry, but also includes photography, and other visual arts. They also publish other media, such as audio on vinyl.

What is uncivilized art? I wouldn't say there's one definition, and that what makes the book beautiful; there's something for everyone in the editors' compilation. Optimistic, pessimistic, urban, rural, abstract, practical - they have it all. Contributors of the book are basically asking the question, "what if society didn't have to look like this?" They're opening up the space to consider or reflect on something completely different.

It's also that sort of next-edge material that's great to be exposed to. Contributors have already moved beyond conversations of sustainability and despair. Instead of hearing the same old ideas, you'll encounter concepts that are jarring, and things you'll disagree with. This is good, as it arouses a certain kind of consciousness that encourages critical thinking.… (more)
