I’m a big fan of science fiction and it takes a lot to impress me, but this book has managed it! The story follows a downtrodden main character Robert on a mission that is action-packed, dangerous and important in more ways than one. I love the way this author has managed to take a fast-paced sci-fi plot and infuse it with life-like characters searching for solutions to real life problems. It’s rare to get characters in sci-fi novels which read and feel like real human beings, but Robert is one of them. I also really enjoyed his transformation from a beaten down man, to someone who wakes up and steps up when the going gets tough.

The writing is superb and it pulled me right into the story. The worldbuilding is presented with just enough detail to give the reader a clear picture without bogging the story down with unnecessary info. I was able to picture the settings and scenes clearly in my mind, which is always a definite plus in my opinion. The plot flows easily and logically, and I didn’t find a single instance where the story dragged. Actually I read this in a single day, because I had trouble putting it down.

Highly recommended!

It sounded like it would be a good, old fashion space opera, but the writing is awkward, the story telling is more factual and less of a story, and much of the story just made no sense (e.g. steal a spaceship and fly to Mars was a non-event and just took up a couple pages, even after there was no good explanation really of why the person was on the moon anyway). Abandoned it after about a third of the book.
