This story just dragged for me, plodding until the last couple of chapters. Peasprout really is unattractively self-centered, not bothering to learn the names of fellow students she doesn't see as competition and while knowing her survival is on the line is deficient in observational and listening skills. Of course it turns around, but more mechanically than credibly.
I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. It has great worldbuilding and a fascinating skating element, with a little mystery, lots of competition, mean girls, and navigating new friendships. I think it's a solid choice for booktalks and school visits, with a great hook.
Generally stories with annoying adolescent characters do not appeal to me, but I found myself rooting for this ungrateful daughter right from the beginning.
I'm not quite sure what I just read but it was pretty fun.
Obligatory down star though because I forgot about it for a month.
