Pictures from the Water Trade: Adventures of a… by John David Morley

Marvellously vivid account of the adventures of a young man in Japan; while much of it is devoted to his exploration of the bar scene (the "water trade" of the title),
it also includes a thoughtful account of calligraphy and other aspects of Japanese culture.
