This is a landmark book which represent the convergence of many crucial trends in photography: use of color film, snapshot esthetic, interest for the everyday and the social landscape, deadpan irony. In 1972 Shore was following Walker Evans, incorporating Warhol's influence, coming along the same path of Eggleston, starting part of what was soon to be summarized by the New Topographics 1975 exhibition and anticipating many others photographic evolutions still to come. So this is really important material. I'm a bit disappointed by the quality of the prints and by the overall book design and typographic (but we're talking about a quite cheap book).… (more)

This is the complete "Uncommon Places" collection. The reproduction are big and high quality, the work is just marvelous. The final interview is very interesting, the opening essay could have been longer and more accurate. Such a beautiful book maybe deserved a richer introduction. But you can't get tired of watching these beautiful reproduction of Shore's work through America with an 8x10 camera.

A natural descendant -and companion - to Szarkowski's "The Photographers's Eye", Shore's book is a great tool for the student and for the photography reader in general. Each concept is described cleraly and shortly and accompanied by significant - and beautiful, and greatly reproduced - pictures. A pleasurable short read, destined to be followed by many re-reads of several parts of the text.
