I thought this book would be offensive, as it was written in 1935 and is an old book online at the Rosetta Project, but I was surprised as it was thoughtful and informative. The author made it clear that Micco would not have been at home anywhere else but the Everglades. Also, Micco did not attend school and the author did not appear to think this was wrong in any way. I thought I would find that the author Vernam would refer to the Seminole lifestyle in a condescending way, but he did not do that anywhere in the story. I would use this book to illustrate how the Seminoles used to live to fourth-graders in a school curriculum.… (more)
