Teaching grammar is probably the hardest and most neglected aspect of being a high school English teacher; mainly because it bores the kids and treats language as a set of rules rather than the fluid concept that it really is. Weaver's adherence to Whole Language is problematic, mainly because so many of our students do not speak English at home and therefore do not have equal exposure to the language.

Traditionally, students have been taught English grammar in isolation through worksheets, drills and exercises that are supposed to make them better writers, but long experience has shown that these skills don't transfer well to student papers. In this useful, if somewhat dated, textbook, Constance Weaver explains an alternative method of teaching grammar, one that relies not on rote memorization, but on meeting students at their point of need with practical "mini-lessons" that demonstrate effective writing without all the unnecessary details and fussy terminology. While technical and perhaps overly-illustrated with scans of student papers and drawings, this book provides a good overview of this workable approach.… (more)

Not as useful as I thought it would be. This is more a series of essays about grammar and philosophy than grammar for teachers. It seemed weak on the need for teaching grammar, ironically.
