June Whitfield is an exception to the understood state of affairs. During the second half of the twentieth century, women were not perceived as being able to be funny. They were the eye candy standing next to the funny man: not June Whitfield - she was, may I say still is, an attractive lady, but she was (and still is) genuinely funny.

This book takes one through June's career, largely in picture form. This brings many happy memories of British comedy from the 1940's up to the present time. I am still not sure how Ms Whitfield managed to be such a good comic actress in a time when so little material was written for a funny lady, but thank goodness she was.… (more)
