Unni Wikan, born in Ibestad, Norway, is a professor of social anthropology at the University of Oslo. She has worked as a consultant to UNICEF and the World Food Program in Bhutan, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation in Palestinian areas, and the United Nations Development Program in Yemen.

She has done field work in a number of countries, including Egypt, Oman, Yemen, Indonesia, Bhutan, and in Scandinavia, and her research has resulted in 10 books. She's a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

I read this back in the 90's but I really enjoyed it and learned quite a bit from it. A lot of what I read has stuck with me through the years. I'm glad I live in the United States!
