Description | Aaron Burr (1756–1836) was a hero of the Revolutionary War and third Vice President of the United States. He is best remembered for having shot and killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804. In the election of 1800, he received the same number of electoral votes as Thomas Jefferson, forcing the election to the House of Representatives and causing the constitution to be amended. Later he was accused of treasonably trying to create an empire in the west. He would be acquitted, but his reputation never recovered and historians differ about the truth of the charges.
