There are at least five distinct peoples called 'Tonga' in Central Africa:
(i) A patrilineal people in Mozambique, part of the Southern Division of the Bantu.
(ii) A matrilineal people of the Central Division of Bantu who live on the plateau north of the Zambesi River and on both banks of the Zambesi and Lake Kariba.
(iii) A people in the lower Zambesi area in Mozambique south-east of Tete.
(iv) A Bantu people in the Sabi valley in Zimbabwe.
(v) A lakeside people of Malawi.
