In this book the author shares her knowledge as a weight-loss-surgery group facilitator and professional, and also discusses her life before and after surgery, and why she made the choice to have the operation. Sometimes funny, sometimes painful, Ritchie reveals how her obesity kept her from enjoying "normal" activities, like going to the beach, wearing shorts, or dancing in a club- and affected larger life-issues, like applying for jobs or having an active sex life. She also analyzes her own complicity in her obesity, and stresses personal responsibility for other weight loss surgery patients, emphasizing throughout the book that surgery is not a quick-fix solution, but a tool. Ultimately, weight loss success depends on the choices the patient makes after the procedure.
