In 1886 the U.S. Congress authorized the Bureau of Ethnology (a division of the Smithsonian Institution later renamed the Bureau of American Ethnology) to publish a series of Bulletins containing the results of research, mainly about American Indian cultures. This became the most comprehensive series ever published by the BAE, continuing until the BAE was merged into the Smithsonian Office of Anthropology, under the Museum of Natural History, in 1965. A total of 200 bulletins were issued, and initial print runs were distributed free of charge. Many bulletins have been reprinted either by the Smithsonian, by private presses, or as e-books. (English, Unclassified)
The Bulletin was published 1887-1971, started when the Bureau was called the Bureau of Ethnology; it became the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1903. 1887-1894: #1-8 and 10-24 (Bureau of Ethnology bulletin; The Bulletin title was given retrospectively.) 1889: #9, "Bibliography of the Muskhogean Languages" by James Constantine Pilling.
