- The series is inspired by both Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and fantasy fiction. It takes place in a world that is inhabited by both humans, who have a medieval social structure, and the Oldkind, supernatural beings.The latter are divided into three groups, Tekari, who are hostile to human beings (gryphons, lamia, direwolves, worms, banshees); Shani, who are friendly (wyverns, dragons, beoryn, forge-wights, goblins, hobgoblins, wood-wights); and Idar, who are indifferent, but not harmless if disturbed (trolls). Besides the usual social classes, humans are divided between riders and nakla. Riders bond with wyverns, beoryns, and descendants of Edan the Fireborn, with dragons. The bond is very close. Nakla warriors are called Rangers. Humans worship one or more facets of the Fourfold God: Mikla (Protector, W), Thell (Unmaker, S), Janna (Provider, E), Odei (Creator, N).
