- About My Library
Working at a public library is a blessing and a curse. My library has gone from YA only to anything and everything as I am peeking at so many books that are coming in daily and having interesting conversations about them. I try to focus on and highlight:
- Canadian authors (special interest in BC authors, specifically Vancouver Island)
- Female authors
- IBPOC authors (special interest in First Nations, Inuit, Métis, Korean, Kānaka Maoli, and Māori authors)
- YA Horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy (special interest in 2SLGBTQIA+ authors, specifically including asexual representation)
However, there will be plenty of books that are outside of these interests (library curse? blessing?). I've been more interested in Canada Reads finalists (thank you coworkers!) and even the odd book that has hundreds of holds on it and I want to know why (Where the Crawdads Sing, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Eruption). My TBR is never going to be finished in my lifetime, or my next, but the library has expanded my collection greatly and it's always exciting to open a new book or see one on the hold shelf.
- About Me
As a panromantic asexual (panro ace) and someone who battles suicidal ideation, I've always struggled to feel represented in books and among my friends. Slowly this is changing, but I hope to uplift books and media that showcase this as there's nothing better than feeling truly seen. I want to point to a book and say, "This helps explain me." That way friends, family, and loved ones can have something to understand when I'm unable or too tired to explain in a way people get.
I work in a regional public library and I believe this is one of the best ways to uplift the stories and voices that I needed when I was finding my way through life. I adore all things Young Adult and spooky. I game into the twilight hours and spend my time reading in between matches (and maybe even during some of them). I carry my book with me everywhere I go because there's always a moment to read.
I love giving recommendations and I want to hear what people love and don't love about books or series! There is a book for everyone and it's my hope to find the perfect one for everyone. Parents kept coming to me with requests for scary books for their kids and soon I realized Goosebumps just wasn't cutting it anymore. I love blending my passions with books to reach the younger readers, there's for Fortnite, Pokemon, and Minecraft books; for older readers we have Five Nights at Freddy's, Assassin's Creed, the Witcher, Halo, and so much more in both Fiction and Graphic Novels. I support gaming in the library and I support book tie-ins that bridge the gap. It reaches every genre and opens the library to the gamer/reader!
People truly underestimate the use and need for public libraries, but I am always happy to show them the incredible resources the library has! Interlibrary Loans from across Canada, Lifelong Learning classes, access to school textbooks, genealogy research with Ancestry.com, and have you seen a seed library or spoken to a Master Gardener before? Truthfully, I hadn't known either, so when someone tells me they don't understand why libraries still exist in 2025, I love the conversations to follow.
