I'm on LibraryThing mainly because I need to keep track of all the books I have in the house, so my catalogue here is invaluable. I often come across titles I get an urge to buy - it could be on the web or in bibliographies in other books - but sometimes I actually have the book, but have forgotten that I once bought it. Then this catalogue comes in handy for checking before I buy. And since the system in my books shelves are very bad, and always subject to changes - books are sometimes moved from one shelf to another, or from one room to another, for various reasons - then again a catalogue up here helps me to be sure of what I actually have. I don't have 9000 titles neatly listed in my head. But here they are neatly listed, and usually also with the original book covers, which I scan at home and upload.

I'm not a real book collector. I don't buy books for their value as commodities in a market. I'm not a completist. I don't buy books because they may become rare and valuable one day, or because they are signed first editions, but because I want to read them, or, in some cases, because I'm fascinated by the cover art. Art books and reference works are of course bought for other obvious reasons.

I will never be able to read all my books, but I think having many shelves of unread books is the same as having a great fortune, an intellectual Aladdin's cave. I will never run out of good books to read about something that interests me or matters to me.
