Introduction
Provisions began in 2000 and was originally located in Dupont Circle in Washington DC until moving to Virginia in 2011. Provisions Research Center for Art and Social Change is located at George Mason University's School of Art in Fairfax, VA where its resources are available to Mason students and scholars as well as the general public. Provisions also serves as the research office for Mason Exhibitions.
Provisions is a research, learning, and production center investigating the intersections of art and social change. Provisions is a leading voice advancing knowledge and promoting understanding of a wide range of social topics. It produces innovative projects to critically investigate issues surrounding these topics. With its extensive library, public programming, and research opportunities, it supports artistic, scholarly, and activist endeavors that explore the social dimensions of contemporary culture.
Provisions features programs such as exhibitions, public art, residencies, screenings, workshops, lectures, and publications. To further disseminate its mission and programs, Provisions seeks partnerships and collaborations with artistic, educational, and philanthropic organizations.

Collection
Provisions’ collection offers a unique context to study social change subject areas and topics not easily found in mainstream bookstores, public libraries or the Internet. It is international in scope and perspective, diverse in its voices, and balanced in its commitment to illuminating movements, experiences and struggles for social change. The collection supports the idea that social change is a broad-based endeavor best served by a wholistic and inclusive approach. The value of Provisions' collection lies also in its attentiveness to the intersections between arts and social change, where inspirations for future social models are emerging. The collection is a critical resource for Provisions' ongoing exhibitions, educational and research programs. The inclusion of books, articles and other research materials in exhibitions is a hallmark of Provisions' curatorial strategy.
