A few repetitions and if you're a regular reader of his blog, a lot of ground already covered, but in any case, still a well put together collection of tech related and overall society relevant information that should almost be required reading for anyone to regulate or influence these aspects of life. Really recommended.
Very good and funny book with great cast of characters and nice development. A bit like Medieval Suicide Squad. I can really see why they want to film this.
Very nice non-Cosmere compilation of some short stories: mix of early and later work, with a brand new novella that was the highlight of the book for me. Nice time travel story that somehow reminded me a bit of the Umbrella Academy (not sure exactly why, probably because of the cataclysm aspect)) but with a Sanderson twist.
Starts the usual Dan Brown way, but unfortunately the subject is such a turn off that I could not make it through this time. I just had to stop once they started exposing the "theories" behind the "secret", so I stopped at about the halfway point.
Good conclusion (?) to the series, but a bit too much "push your luck" given the severity of the consequences if the plan did not work perfectly.
Ambitious war novel that is also a strong commentary on society. Even though it should be hard to follow, the author find a way to make it not too hard to understand. I understand now why this was so well received.
interesting investigation at a planned wedding in the Highlands. Quite a few details about the past of some of the main and side characters. The investigation is as usual full of misdirection, etc... but I'm not that happy with how the final reveal happened, seems a bit flimsy to finalize the theory. But overall still a fun book in this series if you like the characters.
YA fantasy romance. I guess I was not the target audience, so did not finish it. Not bad, but not that interesting for me.
Very nice murder mystery novel set in a Fantasy setting where technology is replaced by biological mods. Really looking forward to the second book.
Weird mix a story in different genres and types of writing. Riverworld seems an interesting setting, but most of the rest of the stories were not great.
Novella length story in a medieval setting but with a sci-fi twist. Quite interesting with enjoyable interaction between the characters. Minus half a star for one unresolved piece of info.
Interesting and funny continuation of the story. Not quite sure about the physics aspect of it, but overall very good.
Very nice second book of the series, with the same group plus a few new characters. Looking forward to the third one.
Some interesting concept, but also a mismash of different topics and pieces of text and styles. Not quite sure why I finished this one...
Very nice this book in the series with the same lovable characters plus a few new ones. While we do get a resolution of the mystery from our point of view, it's not quite as clear from the main characters point of view, which is a bit different than usual.
Easy read, but not that interesting. Not really a sci-fi novel either, more a collection of small stories about the event and its impact on the lives of many different people. Not Scalzi's best in my opinion.
Very interesting near-future story related to climate change and the current political scene in the US. Little detail, but I really like how they handled the guns at the end, since I was wondering how it could make sense and stay in the tone of the story.
The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel: Genius, Power, and Deception on the Eve of World War I by Douglas Brunt
Quite interesting biography of the inventor of the Diesel engine with a lot of geo-political context. The "mysterious" part covers various theories for his death/disappearance, but is fairly short and does not provide any conclusive evidence, which is understandable given the amount of time since it happened.
New late stage Cosmere novel that integrates and expand SIxth of the Dusk novella. Quite well done and great ending. Would definitely love to revisit that setting in the future.
A collection of stories of mixed-genre. A few interesting ones, but nothing really special. Maybe if you're a real die-hard Rush fan that knows all the details of every song, it's more interesting, but I didn't feel much of the connection except for a few lines/song titles.
Feels like the fantasy romance version of Harry Potter with dragons. The setup of the rules for the school feels quite wrong with all the expected killing: definitely not the ideal way to train your new recruits as you could lose your best potential candidates because of a gust of wind or a stupid bonehead bully. So that took away a lot of the enjoyment of the book for me, although the ending was interesting.
It took me a while to really get into the book, trying to decipher all the nuances of this alternate timeline, but once things became clearer, the story got really interesting.
YA novel. A few things did not click with me, so I stopped at about 50%. Not too bad overall, just not interesting enough.
Not quite as interesting as the previous two books of the series. The quote-unquote investigation is not that great and you don't really feel the emotional impact of the main turning point. I even had to double-check if I had missed something because it felt so underwhelming.
Quite enjoyable sci-fi military story with some potential fantasy elements (depending on potential future explanations), mixed with a bit of romance. The main character is well developed and entertaining. A few answers are uncovered toward the end of the book, but looking forward to more details in the next one.
Good second book in this series. Completely unrelated to the first investigation, but still interesting and it develops the world quite a bit more. Looking forward to the third book.
Started out slow, then got a bit more interesting. But then I lost all interest after the diving incident, where the reaction of the characters just did not seem to make sense, so could not finish this one.
Not much new in this book for someone who's been following this topic for many years, hence the 3 stars. For someone without knowledge of this critical issue, this becomes an important book to read even with the many flaws in the book.
Wind and Truth: Book Five of the Stormlight Archive (The Stormlight Archive, 5) by Brandon Sanderson
Very good conclusion of the first part of the 10-book series. A lot of the back-story of some of the main characters was finally filled-in in this giant book. I think cutting a bit of the Visions could have helped reduce the page count. Those extra pages could probably have been better used to give more details into the reasons behind the momentous decisions that happen at the end (even if the "end" is already over one hundred pages long).
I really liked the first 9/10th of the book, but not a big fan of the last few chapters. I don't really like how the whole thing gets resolved. But otherwise, Very well developed story with interesting characters.
