Exactly I needed to bring me a smile to my face during a stressful week. Many of these cartoons remind me of myself, and I love the ones that feature her cat. Pretty much these ring true for anyone who is a bit different and knows it!
Beautifully illustrated, Lowry tells of her childhood memories of the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii as well as her life in Japan after World War II.
This graphic novel takes an interesting look at the world of carnival sideshows through the fictional story of two conjoined twins. When the twins risk being separated and one of them dies, can the remaining twin build a new life on her own, or will her sister's ghost haunt her forever?
Noelle is trapped in a blizzard on the interstate with no charge on her phone and a chord that doesn't work. What a wonderful escape! A lovely story with relatable yet quirky characters, sprinkled with just the right amount of cuteness and swoon-worthy moments, that created a very satisfying and magical romance that was like being wrapped in a cozy blanket during a summer storm. Seriously. My heart is full. Sarah Hogle creates a delightful pairing between the fanciful daydreamer Maybell and the grouchy and taciturn Wesley. Thrown together by Maybell's Great Aunt Violet's passing and struggling to navigate a dual inheritance, the two struggle with what they both envision for the property while keeping to Violet's wishes. This story is perfect for anyone who longs for a bit of escapism.

Help comes in the unexpected form of her incredibly good-looking neighbor, Adrian Copeland, who is not only an amazing lawyer, but is wonderful with her sister's daughter. Part of "The Friend Zone" series but can be read as a stand alone as well, Jimenez writes interesting and relatable characters that will keep you reading until they reach their happily ever after ending.
A quirky take on a gothic fantasy, this graphic novel features Haley, our teenage heroine and gothic novel expert, battling to save a castle that is under siege by unknown evil forces. The world Garrity creates is strange, yet familiar and the characters are silly, snarky, and fun.
Cassette's library sleuthing pays off as she discovers secrets of long lost buildings and interesting stories of Omaha's past, taking the reader on a fact-filled, historical, tour of some of Omaha's lesser known sites. I couldn't put this down and read it in one sitting.
A smart, witty, and sexy romance novel set in Victorian England amidst the women's suffragist movement. If you enjoy enemies to lovers with a happily ever after plot this book definitely delivers. I really loved the group of suffragists that Annabelle befriends, as well as watching her wear down Sebastian is highly enjoyable.
Ava Greene thinks she wants to quit her job as a flight attendant and settle down...but does she really? Having a layover on a tropical island with her cocky and unbelievably handsome co-worker does wonders to change her perspective, and her opinions of Jack Stone. Perfect for fans of The Hating Game and The Ex Talk.
A binge worthy, historical, time traveling, romance that includes a strong, female, lead and a love that defies time. A well written, researched, and immersive read about family and the fight to survive during 1700's Scotland.
Penny is a sarcastic, aspiration less, 26-year-old, temp worker by day and shut-in by night. Then she runs into a couple of guys who are making an indie horror film. Penny throws caution to the wind and agrees to help with their movie and everything in her life changes for the better. This is a fun story of friendship and finding oneself.
American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century by Maureen Callahan
Truly one of the most riveting as well as frightening true crime books I have read since "The Stranger Beside Me." The story of serial killer Israel Keyes and the descriptions of his depravity will horrify even the most veteran true crime reader. This book is written in an easy-to-follow narrative that will make it impossible for readers to put down. Keyes is the stuff of nightmares to be sure. I could not put this book down!
The Daily Show host talks about his childhood growing up in Africa, born a crime, the son of a white, Swiss, father and a black mother. A sad yet comical story of rebellion, abuse, survival and his mother's unconditional love.
A complicated and riveting book about haunting memories, trauma, survival, loyalty, hope, and human resilience during WW2.
This is the story of the notorious necrophile Ed Gein, who was the inspiration for the killers in the movies Psycho, Silence of the Lambs and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as told through the award-winning artwork of Eric Powell and the painstaking research and thoughtful dramatization of true crime author Harold Schechter. The combination of the haunting artwork and the incredible research that went into this book make for a fascinating, if not horrifying, read.
If You Tell: A True Story of Murder, Family Secrets, and the Unbreakable Bond of Sisterhood by Gregg Olsen
Not for the faint at heart, "If You Tell" is the story of the Knotek sisters' fight for survival while growing up under the tyrannical rule of their sadistic mother Shelly. Along with their overly obedient and frequently abusive stepfather, Shelly creates a web of lies and the perfect stories in order to draw people into her world of torture, abuse, and eventually double murder. Full of violence and misery, this book is like a car accident you cannot look away from. It is a well written, true crime, page turner.
Debora was a child raised by a cold, possibly sociopathic but definitely alcoholic, mother. Looking for love, belonging, and acceptance, Debora finds solace in her church. It's just before Thanksgiving in 1978, in Omaha Nebraska, and life for Debora will never be the same. Her cold and dysfunctional parents expect her to carry on as usual, but she begins to experience PTSD from her abduction and sexual assault. Working through her trauma, Debora must come to terms with her childhood, the abduction and assault, and the fallout within her family from these occurrences. It is a story of strength, survival, and healing.
This is an interesting and fun concept for a contemporary romance novel. Shay Goldstein is an NPR radio station manager who has always wanted to be on air. Dominic Yun is the hotshot journalist newly hired by the struggling station. The station needs to do something new and exciting to grab listeners, and Shay has a plan. She and Dominic will pretend to be a couple that has broken up and they will host a show about relationships together. What can go wrong, right? A must read for fans of The Hating Game.
Best known for his role as Officer Clemmons on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, Francois Clemmons' memoir tells a story of a childhood filled with trauma and fear, as well as a career filled with self-discovery and sacrifice. Fighting against systemic racism and homophobia throughout his career, Francois' life story is one of many struggles, but also one of amazing accomplishments. This is a must read for Mr. Rogers fans, especially in this time of racial injustice.
I wanted so so much to be in love with this book and I almost was. Very anti-climactic in the second half. I loved the characters of Ahmad and Evie, but their HEA was sort of lukewarm for my taste. Matthews is a good author and I loved her writing style, but I was somewhat disappointed in this story.
This needs to be made into a movie or television show. Absolutely tore through this and enjoyed every moment of it. At more than one point I was gasping out loud and crying out. I stopped several times to blab about the plot to my husband. I cannot wait to read more!
