I really enjoyed this book and the message that it portrays to young readers. The story is about the arrival of a new eccentric classmate, Susan, who goes by the name Stargirl. Stargirl is every unusual as compared to the other students. She does things like decorate her desk, sings in the rain and plays a ukulele during class time. The students are skeptical of her and believe she is weird, at first. Then they come to actually like her and believe her uniqueness is cool and fresh to them and she makes friends. This shows children to always be themselves no matter what everyone else thinks. This is a good message to students to show them that people like Stargirl do exist and they can make a difference in a classroom. I think this is a great book for 5th to 6th grade readers because this is a time in their life where they are trying to find themselves and discover who they are and I think this book would be helpful to them.
i thought this book was okay. The story's about a young 10-year-old girl who tries to keep her family together after her father leaves and does not return. Her mother has her and her younger brother, Charlie, hired out as servants to help pay off their family's debts. Lyddie has strong family values and believes if she perseveres, she can bring her family back together. This story is about one young girl’s strength, determination, and personal growth. I liked the moral of the story which is to try your hardest and persevere and also to love your family. I just couldn't relate to many of the problems that Lyddie faced which made it harder to connect to the story. However, the book used good descriptive language that helped me to visualize what was happening in the story.
When I was a child, the Magic Treehouse books were my favorite books to read. The quick and easy to read chapters made me feel a sense of accomplishment as I zipped through the pages. In this specific Magic Treehouse book, the two kids travel back in time by their treehouse into the dinosaur era. They are able to meet and see many of the dinosaurs that lived in that time. The two embark on a wild and crazy adventure that keeps the reader engaged throughout the whole book. The simple vocabulary and fact filled story makes for an extremely informational book packed with details about each dinosaur. The author did a great job at creating an informational book with a sense of adventure. This helps children to enjoy their learning process.
I thoguht this was a really interesting and cool book. I had no idea that there were children's books on such diverse topics. In this book, there is a boy who is born, however isn't like the other boys in his class. Instead of playing with trucks and sports, he likes to play with dolls. And instead of dressing in manly, macho clothes, he decides to dress in a ballerina costume. There is an obvious distinction between him and "normal" boys of his age. He finds out that he is transgender. The books does a great job at depicting what transgender means and putting it in children's terms. His parents still love him no matter what and he is happy which the book shows is all that matters. I liked this book because it helps children become aware of an issue that not many children might know about. I think it is god for the children to be exposed to this controversial topic through children's literature with basic and simple terms. I really enjoyed this book and think it is a helpful resource for many children. It teaches a great moral of being happy with who you are, even if you aren't like other people around you.
In this "mystery" book, there are two ducks who are trying to solve cases that are occurring throughout a farm. First they find that someone has stolen pickled-peppers from the hen, then some tomatoes from the horses and lettuce from the sheep. They thought this could only mean one thing, somebody wanted to make a salad. The ducks knew just who to suspect, the Dirty Rat. When they went to his house they couldn't find any clues, until they saw a piece of lettuce dangling from his chin. He was arrested, tried and convicted on three counts of vegetable vagrancy, offensive bad breath, and not using a napkin to wipe his chin. I thought this was a cute story that helped to explain the process of using clues and investigating to solve a mystery. There were several references to other fairytales and the author very suddlely put them into the text and they made perfect sense. This book is a comical and fun read. It is organized into times to make it easier to understand the process of organization and the importance of time. This is a great book for mid-level readers and I think it was very enjoyable to read.
In this book, Gritch the Witch is hungry for some Bunny Bread, but when she goes out to get it, her broom seems to be broken. She can't fly anywhere. So she makes her way to Foxy's to buy one. After searching a long time for the right broom for Gritch, she finally decides a broom is much to old fashioned for her. She wants something hip and up to date. Foxy finally gives her a up to date flying car that she decides to buy and zoom off in. I thought this book was a very cute and short spin of a fairytale. The pages included a lot of words and text so it is appropriate for 3rd and 4th graders. There isn't any true moral to the story it's just a fun read. There were many comical parts in the story as well, including when the salesman related his merchandise to other previous fairytales. This is a great book for readers who are looking for a laugh and an easy read.
In this book, a baby boy is being chased around the house by his mother, who just wants him to take a nap. The baby keeps finding things he would rather do like drink milk, sing and goof around. The mother finally suggests reading a book and the baby agrees. As they sit in the chair the baby finally falls asleep to the mother reading the book, then the mother finally gets to sleep as well. I thought this was a cute book because it is definitely a large problem in parenting, getting your child to take a nap. This is a constant struggle among parents and something they can all relate to. Children can see from the story that they need their sleep and they do need to take a nap. The book is also full of a lot of similar and rhyming words so it is easier for children to read along and learn the words easily. This is a great, fun beginning reading book.
I liked this boom because it was very different to any other children's book I've ever read. It was poetry, but it didn't rhyme so it was a great way to teach children that poems aren't always in the same format and they don't always have to rhyme. This story was about a man describing his hometown of Harlem. The descriptive language used was great. He used a lot of details to describe the look on peoples faces as well as the type of music they listened to and what people did in their free time. This allows children to see another culture as well. The illustrations in the book were also very unique and detailed. This was a grade book for middle readers and should definitely be incorporated into a lesson on poetry.
I liked this book because through Minli's adventures the readers learned very important lessons. I thought two very important lessons taught from the story were to have hope and to always help others. Against her mother's wishes, Minli grows up listening to all her father's stories of the Old Man in the Moon, Jade Dragon, greedy Magistrate Tiger. Her family is poor and they live by the barren Fruitless Mountain. As a young girl the reader initially does not believe she can "help" her family, but she runs away to change her family's destiny by seeking out the Old Man in the Moon. This book was filled with adventure and rich details. The descriptive language used by the author helped the reader to visualize. The pictures on some of the pages were also helpful to the readers. I thought this was a great book for older readers and also helped to show culture.
I really liked this book because of the important lesson that it taught children. Joseph started out with a large perfectly good overcoat, then as that got worn and beat up he turned it into a regular coat. When the regular coat got too beaten up he turned it into a scarf. When the scarf got beaten up he turned it into a hat and so on. He just kept making something out of something he already had, instead of just throwing it away. This taught the important lesson that you can always make something out of nothing and to make the best out of everything you have. This helps children to appreciate what they have. The language of the book was appropriate for K-2nd grade readers and it had great illustrations that were somewhat realistic. I really enjoyed this book and think it would make a great addition to a classroom library.
I absolutely loved this book as a child and I still love it today. I thought the whole concept of giving the letters a personality as they climb up the tree was a great idea. The author described the letters off how they are formed such as "being tied up in a knot". This is a great way to teach students the alphabet and help them to remember how to create the letters. Not only was the book informative but it was appealing to the eyes and the ears. The visuals were great. They stood out with their bright and vibrant colors and made the book fun. Also the rhyming scheme and beat that went along with reading the book made it easier and more fun to read. I think this book is great for beginning readers as well as children who are trying to learn the alphabet. It is definitely one of my favorite children's books.
I thought this book was cute and a good way to teach children how to read. There was a lot of similar words and repeating rhyming patterns so a beginning reader can read this book quite easily. The sound the was repeated throughout the book was the -eep sound. This sound was on every page. This way the reader only has to change the beginning sound and can focus on that sound instead of the whole word. I thought it was quite but the plot was a little odd. It didn't make that much sense. The sheep were driving a jeep and it got stuck. I thought maybe the book could've included something about the sheep like their wool or something to make the book a bit more informational. However, I like the repeating sound pattern and the rhyming. The illustrations were cute as well.
I thought this book was extremely unique and engaging. The book is composed of many riddles that involve the reader counting the number of objects on the page. The book starts off with easy riddles and numbers that you can count one by one and then as the book goes on the riddles and counting get harder. The book teaches children about grouping things together in bunches instead of counting one by one because it's quicker. The language is easy to understand and the illustrations are great. I love that this book integrates two separate subjects and allows students to use their knowledge of both. The riddles are a little tricky sometimes which is good because it challenges the reader. I really liked this book!
I absolutely loved this book! It taught such a good lesson and was super easy to read and understand with simple vocabulary. It was about a tree and a boy. The boy visited the tree everyday and played with its branches, climbed it up and down and loved it. Then as he got older he wanted more from the tree. These things were more materialistic and things that were harder for the tree to give. Finally as the boy turned into a very old man he again began to be happy with the simple things about the tree, like it just being a nice quiet place to relax. This book had such a great lesson, which is to be happy with the simple things in life. People shouldn't be as focused on materialistic things. The language was short, yet sophisticated. There were some larger words but it was an easy read. The illustrations were great. I would definitely recommend this book for K-2nd graders.
I really liked this book because it taught children about parts of the world in a very unique way. The author uses many colors and illustrations along with text to show what children all around the world do when they lose a tooth. I was actually unaware about all of the different traditions that different parts of the world have when they lose a tooth. This book was extremely informative and interesting and really taught children a lot. It taught them that not every culture does the same things and we are all different. I also really liked the way the book was organized by different regions of the world on each open page and then within those regions were the countries. The book taught children a lot about culture and diversity.
I really like this book because of it's fun and humorous atmosphere. I used to read this book all the time as a kid and loved it. In the story, there's a with that is really craving some piggie pie. In order to make her famous piggie pie, she needs some pigs. She goes to a farm to get some and all of the pigs know she is trying to eat them so they dress up as other animals in order to disguise themselves. The witch gets super frustrated which is what makes the story so comical. This fun book has excellent illustrations with contrasting font sizes that make the text so appealing to readers. I didn't really find a true moral of the story, but I found it to be an enjoyable and fun read.
I really liked this book because of the moral of the story, the adorable pictures and the vocabulary level. The story was about a mouse who was given the name Chrysanthemum and she loved it all her life until she came to school. Every made fun of her name because it was so long and different. Then she started to hate her namea nd wish she never had it. Then, a new teacher came to school who everyone loved and she had a unique flower name as well and said that she loved the name Chrysanthemum. Everyone was shocked and then they started to love her name too and wish there names were more unique. The moral of the story was to not care what other people think. If you like something, but other people don't, it's okay to be different. The story was so cute and easy to read. the pictures were adorable. I think young readers will really like this book.
I really liked this book for many reasons. The story was about two wolves that wanted to eat some sheep, so they dress up as the sheep and try to join their pack. The sheep find out that they are actually wolves and they shave them and the wolves run away. The story began kind of in the middle. It didn't start with the classic "There were two wolves that lived...". It actually took some thinking and context clues to figure things out. The vocabulary was the correct level for 3rd and 4th graders. The story also had a great lesson for the young readers. It taught children that they shouldn't lie because they will get caught. They should always tell the truth. I would definitely recommend reading this book with children.
I liked this book because of what it teaches young readers. I feel like it really focuses on repetition and cause and effect. Throughout the story, the book repeats the phrase "if you give a moose a muffin" and then it say what will happen if you do give a moose a muffin. There were many comical things that the book mentions that I think young readers will enjoy. I think this book is good for beginning reading because the words are simple and repeat themselves a lot. The things I don't like about the book is that there is no informational aspect of it. The book doesn't teach you anything about mooses or such. There is also no moral of the story that children can learn from this. There is also no comprehension really involved. However, it is a fun book to read and young children will be able to learn basic words and phrases because of it.
I really liked this book because of how unique and creative it was. When I first saw the cover, I really had no idea hwat the book was going to entail, but as I opened it I discovered how the book is filled with directions on how to touch or direct the page to make the dots on it move. For example, the page will say to press the dot to make it bigger. Then on the next page the dot gets bigger. Or it will say to tilt the page to the left and then on the next page all of the dots will be tilted to the left. I feel that this book teaches kids a lot about following directions and cause and effect. They have to follow the directions carefully to "make the dots do what they are supposed to". Then it also teaches cause and effect because they see that if they do one thing then something else happens. I really liked this book because t was so simple, yet it taught many lessons.
I really liked this book. I thought it was a very easy read and taught a good lesson. AT the beginning, it started out very slow and depressing. I felt so bad for esperanza because of all of the terrible things that constantly kept happening to her. This book was about a family who was wealthy and lived in a very comfortable home and lived and easy life. Esperanza never had to work for anything she did and was usually given everything she needed. After her father was killed, their lives were flipped upside down. They are forced to flee to mexico because her uncle wants to marry her mother. Through their travels Esperanza complains and hates their new lifestyle because it is not the life of comfort that she is used to. Then throughout the story she begins to become accustomed to working for what she wants and appreciating what she has more. This story was filled with many morals. One would be to always keep your head up. Although many bad things kept happening to Esperanza, she pushed through and things got better. Another moral would be that you need to work for what you want, it should not just be given to you. This was a great story that I think many young readers will enjoy.
I liked this book because it taught me a lot about the struggles of the Japanese during the Japanese-American War. I found this to be extremely sad and heart wrenching to see what this family went through. The Kawashima family had to flee their home and belongings in Korea to go to Japan where they would be safe and away from danger. This book is about how this family's lives were affected by the war and their journey to get to a safe place. It was completey shocking to see how the Japanese were treated and how much pain they had to go through. Families were torn apart and many people died because of this war. I thought that this book could be a fifth or sixth grade level but there were many concepts in it that I thought might be slightly innapropriate for that age level, such as the topic of rape and war. This book was a little hard for myself to read because of the controversial issues involved. The author did a very good job at hooking the reader in and keeping them interested. It was sort of a slow start, but towards the end I couldn't put the book down.
I really liked this book because it was so unique. In the story, a boy named Moses is deaf and goes on a class field trip to a musical concert with his classmates who are also deaf. Throughout the book, every page is showing hand signals for sign launguage motion by motion to teach readers how to do sign language. The students go to the concert and see that the percussionist is also deaf. She is able to feel the vibrations of the music on her feet so she is able to play along. After teh show the percussionist talks to the students about many ways you can feel music through vibrations. Also at the end of the book their is hand motions of how to do the alphabet all in sign language and other simple words. It is a very informative book that teaches a lot about sign language. It also teaches readers that people who are deaf or hearing impaired can do or be anything they want regardless of their disability and to never give up on your dreams. i thought this was a really cool book with awesome features and pictures.
I really liked this book because it helped to show how someone with cerebrala palsy might feel. It was very informative and atught the reader's a lot about the disease. In the book, a boy named Nathan has cerebral palsy and also has a neighbor who takes care of birds. One of the birds has a hurt wing and is unable to fly so they try to nurse it back to health to gegt it to fly again. When this mission becomes unsuccessful, Nathan trys to find another way to make the bird happy so instead of getting the bird to fly he gets the bird to help teach baby birds to fly on their own. The baby birds learn to fly and the bird is happy. Nathan decides that he is going to help out his neighbor so he can feel accomplished and happy too. He does small chores such as get the mail and feed the birds but his neighbor is very aprreciative of his help. In the story, the bird is like Nathan. They are both handicapped and unable to walk and fly no matter how hard they try so they find other ways to be productive and happy. This book was extremely well written and had a strong and powerful message.
I really enjoyed this book because of the morals of the story and the text. In the story, a raccon is scared to start his first day of school. The mtoher of the raccoon showed her child a tradition that was passed on in their family called "the kissing hand". The mother kisses her baby's hand and then said that whenever he gets scared to hold the hand up to his face and remember that "mommy loves you". This book can teach young readers to not be scared to try new things and to remember that no matter where they are they still have people who care about them. This book can help young children to face difficult situations and feel reassurance. The pictures in the book were adorable and went right along with the story. I would deffinitly recommend this book to young readers.
I thought that this story was very inspirational and realiatic. This book gave readers an insight into a family's struggle of wanting the oppurtunities of American, however their home is in Mexico. This family traveled to America for the job oppurtunities that it has, leaving everything behind to their home in Mexico. It was extremely tough for them, but they felt it was worth it for their family. This book was really good because it gave you a look into another way of life and also to see how blessed Americans are to have freedom and so many oppurtunities. Also the pictures in the book included real photographs of traditional items from Mexico.
I thought this book was extremely informative and well written. This book was during the time of the Japanese American war when people were held in camps. Since there was nothing to do in the camps, people began playing baseball. One boy in particular was always getting picked on in the camps and wasn't too good at baseball. One day, he hit the winning homerun at the game and everyone cheered for him and stared to be nicer to him. They eventually got out of the camps and the same thing happened again at his home. He was being picked on and hit a homerun to stop the bullying. I thought this book was well written because the story was portraying an accurate event in hostory and putting it into simpler terms and also giving it a good story to keep the readers interested. The story had some good vocabualry words in it that related to the war. The iluustrations were very detailed and the words were an appropriate level for the readers to understand.
I thought this was a good book because of the point of view in which the story was told. The book was about a little boy who looked up to his elderly neigher, Mr. George Banks. He talked about what they did together and how the spent their days and also told a lot of information about Mr. Banks including that he didn't know how to read. The two were going to school together, Mr. Banks in an older classroom and the neighbor in another class. The book showed that no matter how young or old you are it is never to late to learn to do anything you want to be able to do. Although, Mr. Banks was much older he still wanted to go to school to learn how to read. This book had an appropriate vocabulary for a 3rd-4th grade level and also the pictures were very vivid and accurate.
I liked this book because it was a stroy and also had a lot of informational parts to it. There was some vocabulary words in it, such as a fawn is a baby deer. George was going around and taking pictures with his camera of different tracks animals were leaving in the ground and he was very facisnated by this. The book showed many different kinds of animal tracks and also touched on where animals live and what they eat. It was a very informative book that taught a lot about animals. Also something that I thought was a good idea was at the end of the book there was an activity where you match the tracks up to the animal it belongs to. I thought this was a nice follow up activity for children to use.
I really enjoyed this book because of how fun and easy it was to read. It could teach children about emotions, friendship and confidence. The monster in the story is sad that he can't scare anybody, but he realizes he doesn't need to be able to scare people in order to be happy. The little boy in the story befriends the moster regardless of how he looks. Also the little boy talks about all of the problems he had that day that could very much relate to the problems of a young child such as a fight with a sibling or loosing in a game or simply a tummy ache. This book could teach children that it is okay when things go wrong because soon the problem will go away and everything will be alright again. This book is filled with so many small lessons in such short text and large font. Its great for young children and fun to read.
