This book made me want to major in biochemistry and find a cure to ebola when I was like 10 years old. Unfortunately, I almost failed college chem, but it was an incredibly good book, very gory and detailed. I think I should re-read it soon...
For those of you who have only seen the movie: READ THE BOOK!! It's really really good. There are things that are impressive in the movie that are mind boggling in the book, and the psychology in the book is so much more out there, and believable in ways.
Gregory Maguire is Officially my all-time favorite author. To read his books though properly, you have to read them twice. First you read them to get plot and the overall novel aspect. Then you go back and look at what was going on when he was writing it, and then read it again, and there is so much world commentary going on in all of his writing it's amazing. He's an incredible author and I cannot wait until 'A Cowardly War' comes out.

Oh, and Wicked is a really good book. Elphaba is a rich and well-developed character. All the side characters have more depth to them than many main characters in other books. The story is very good, turning the tables and telling the 'other' side of the story.
Let's behead the ugly step-sisters. Or have Red Riding Hood switch to wolf-skin. And it all rhymes! It's fantastic! And completely gruesome...

This was one of my favorite books growing up. The spine is completely broken, and it's been taped and repaired to the point where in 50 years, if it was the last copy in existence, you might get 50 cents for it ($1 if you include inflation). It's got fabulous illustrations, and the myths aren't prettied up for kids. It tells about how Zeus was a philanderer and Hera was trying to kill Heracles (ahem, Disney crap! Cough! Cough! Excuse me, I think I've got a frog in my throat...). Plus it gets all the Greek names right, and then tells you the Roman names. It's fantastic. A really good starter book for kids.
Another time-travel trashy romance novel. This one he's apparently astral-projecting into the past or something and picks up a chick that way. But there's a giant lizard named Belch and about 12 virgins. Oh, and he's a professional wrestler (a la WWE).

I will admit to liking my trashy romance novels. This one is particularly good, if only for the cover image. It's about a guy from the future who competes in sex games, who comes back in time to today on a vacation. It's campy and silly and very funny. It's got a bit of heart to it, and a lot of sexy.

Pride and Prejudice. It's a classic, do I really have to review it for you? I love this book. It's all stuffy and uptight and you imagine these people in their drawing rooms and pining over each other and then getting married without ever even kissing each other, let alone having sex or seeing each other naked. It's a whole 'nother world than what we live in today, and Jane Austen's prose picks you up and sweeps you along, until you're standin in the parlor with Eliza & Mr. Darcy. She is a bit long winded at times, but rightfully so.

A History of Hollywood and a rough breakdown of how things work. Considering how long the book is, it's surprising how little detail you can get into in that amount of space. Epstein does a fantastic job with the amount of text he uses, but it's clear that if you're planning on actually getting into 'the biz' you will need to do quite a bit more research.

One of my favorite books when I was a child, I wanted to learn to swivel my ear. Roald Dahl is amazing. He writes of dreams as physical things that you catch and then a giant blows them into your room. It's a little creepy, but it's completely wonderful.
This is a fantastic book. It's a small guide to Christchurch and it was written by the ex-wife of a friend of mine who lives there. It's full of little envelopes that you can open and pull tickets out of or little factoids, and all sorts of interesting tidbits. It's also got a ton of old pictures that are fantastic. It's incredibly well put-together.
I hate this book. I was forced into reading it in High school and I hated it. I tend to put myself into the situations that a protagonist is in, and this is not a book that you want to do that with. It was awful. I still managed to get an A on my paper though.
