Today finds me thinking of the joy of get-togethers, and I thought - hey - we're all friendly folks. And the Summer will be approaching in a few months.

Why not have a series of regional Green Dragon get-togethers, attempted to be scheduled on the same day?

Pick a Saturday this Summer, and starting in Australia/New-Zealand, we all try to get together on a regional basis.

I could host a "Northern California" one - others could host New England, Old England ;), Upper Midwest, Northern GA/SC, etc. etc.

They can be whatevers. A picnic in a park. A hang-out at a pizza place.

Soooo....... what do people think? :)

That sounds like a very cool idea!! We could have a Pacific Northwest one for Washington State, British Columbia people. Sounds like fun. It would be great to put faces to names.

I'd put together an Upper Midwest one in the Twin Cities area if there is enough interest.

We could do it on/about Summer Solstice?

That's a great idea! I live in L.A., not far from the L.A. County Fairgrounds; there must be more Angelenos out there in the group, or folks from the San Gabriel Valley...?

It does sound like a good idea. Last year flickr hosted a 24 hr of flickr event. People from around the world all took pictures on the same day and then posted that one shot that they thought represented that day. Some lucky few were chosen to be put into a photo book made by flickr. It was a fun event.

I live in New England....perhaps we can arrange a picnic in Boston Common? Or gather at that place where everyone knows your name?

Great idea. But I'm basically halfway between NYC and Boston, so which way do I go? LOL

Sounds like fun - I was actually talking to mrgooism about doing the wine and food fest in New York this summer. There are also tons of local wineries that do tasteing and tours all summer long. If anyone is interested let me know.

I love the idea, maybe the west coast could id the most northerly member and the most southerly and then we could pick a place nearest the middle for us to gather. I expect it might be in northern Ca.

I would love either a west coast gathering or smaller more regional ones. What a fun idea.

So katylit, don't you think you .... oh, oh, I bet Arctic Stranger could be the most northerly. Anyone seen him around recently or is he still off with the Pro and Con group?

10katylit
Feb 29, 2008, 12:33 pm

Arctic isn't around here very much anymore is he? Having too much fun in Pro and Con I guess. Yes, he's definitely a lot more northerly than me!! ;-)

But there's a couple of GDers on or around Vancouver Island and more I'm sure close to you maggie, so a regional one would be fun - maybe even in Seattle? Some oceanside park to meet up for a picnic?

Feb 29, 2008, 12:35 pm

I think monohex is in Seattle, and then there is oregonobsession? is that the right name?

Let's do it.

Who has a date to propose?

August is always good weather.

12JPB

#6 Boston :D

13terriks
Feb 29, 2008, 1:02 pm

#3 What actual date is Summer Solstice?

#11 Maggie, August can be kind of hellish in the SE US (depends on drought conditions!). ;)

But I'm game.

13> What actual date is Summer Solstice?

This year it's on June 20. At 23:59 UTC/Greenwich Mean Time, if you want to be exact.

Any other South Africans in the GD? June/July is our "winter", and our best time, give or take the hordes of holidaying schoolchildren.

Edited: Feb 29, 2008, 2:25 pm

maggie, katylit - I'd love to get together in a more regional get together. Maybe Seattle, or Vancouver?

Any other Pacific Northwesterners around here?

19Busifer
Feb 29, 2008, 2:34 pm

Oh, this would be nice! Only problem closest spot would be somewhere in England, or maybe in the Netherlands, as I'm quite alone here in Sweden ;-) and I already know I won't be able to afford it. Possibly late summer, over a weekend?

20clamairy
Feb 29, 2008, 2:38 pm

We could all just head to Busifer's place.
;o)

21Busifer
Feb 29, 2008, 2:48 pm

Well, I'd be happy to host a get-together if anyone feels like coming this way 0:)

Please not the summer solstice! As a pagan, that is like planning it for xmas. (We do a giant campout with other pagans around the solstice.)

I think it'd be fun to hang out with PB...who else is Nor Cal?

(ok, I'm really going back to bed now, I promise.)

Feb 29, 2008, 3:07 pm

Sandragon, there are a bunch of us up in this n.w. corner: Katylit on Vancourver Is., Monohex and myself in Seattle area, Oregonobsessive somewhere in Oregon. Maybe there are others I am just not remembering.

Monohex suggested Seattle would be good for him, certainly would work for me. What do you think?

Southeast LTers anywhere??

28katylit
Feb 29, 2008, 3:55 pm

I could probably get down to Seattle for a weekend. I've never been and there's the Clipper ferry that would be fun to take. Yup, might be do-able!!

sandragon? Would you drive or take the Clipper?

29aviddiva
Feb 29, 2008, 4:31 pm

>23 littlegeek:, littlegeek, I'm in the East Bay and I think Esta1923 is also.

30sandragon
Feb 29, 2008, 4:49 pm

28 - katylit, I have no idea. LOL. I've never been from Victoria before. I'll have to do a little research. Clipper would be nice and convenient but would then I may need to rent a car in Seattle? Probably whichever way is less expensive.

31JPB
Feb 29, 2008, 5:06 pm

I live SW of San Jose. If you think "Where Hwy 85 and Hwy 17 meet" you are close enough for all practical purposes.

32Jasper
Feb 29, 2008, 5:08 pm

I'm game for a trip to Victoria, never taken the Clipper tho I"ve driven many times. I'll be needing to restock Murchie's tea soon and Munro Books is always a treat.

33littlebookworm
Feb 29, 2008, 5:12 pm

This is a cool idea - I'll be around New York this summer and I'm sure I could get up there for a weekend as my friend lives in the city. Can anyone else?

34sandragon
Feb 29, 2008, 5:17 pm

32 - Well that would solve katylit's and my dilemma about whether to take the clipper or drive :o) (We both live on Vancouver Island.)

So how would we decide where to meet?

35maggie1944
Feb 29, 2008, 5:21 pm

I would love to come up to Victoria, and I just got my new passport. I can take the boat from Seattle directly to Victoria. That would be so much fun.

When and where? Who knows Victoria the best for picking a place?

I was there a few months ago but can't say I remember the names of anything.

I know downtown Victoria is easy walk from the boat.

36dodger
Feb 29, 2008, 5:27 pm

Very cool idea PB! Anyone else in the Colorado and/or New Mexico area?

37streamsong
Feb 29, 2008, 5:29 pm

I'm in Montana which means Seattle/Vancouver is within a day's drive if that is the closest gathering.

38sandragon
Feb 29, 2008, 5:33 pm

I guess I should 'fess up. I live in Victoria :o)

39littlegeek
Feb 29, 2008, 6:38 pm

Wow, PB, you really are my neighbor. Just "over the hill" in common local parlance.

Where should the Nor Cal peeps meet? Should we go for some fabulous trendy SF eatery or something more centralized to where we all live? That would put us closer to PB's neighborhood, actually. Personally, I love a good excuse to go to the city.

40kawika
Edited: Feb 29, 2008, 6:47 pm

A gathering for us So Cal types could be a lot of fun. I know greendragongirl is also down here, though she's out east a bit. Now that would be a cool excuse to visit my friend's place up in Idyllwyld :D

Disneyland would be fun, too, but it's expensive these days. And summer crowds on a Saturday are ew.

Too bad you're not coming down here, lg...I give you a peronsal tour of the baseball academy ;)

41littlegeek
Feb 29, 2008, 6:56 pm

Ah! Kaw, that sounds fun! I go down to visit family a few times a year. I'll probably be down in May for my mom's birthday.

We should definitely hook up.

I saw Joe Torre on TV today wearing a Dodger's cap. I swear to God, it's the end times.....When did they start televising exhibition games?

42aviddiva
Feb 29, 2008, 7:05 pm

>39 littlegeek: SF is closer for me than PB's neighborhood, but I'm adaptable.

43dodger
Feb 29, 2008, 7:06 pm

Why was he wearing my cap?

44kawika
Feb 29, 2008, 7:18 pm

-->#41 The Dodgers always televise a few of the games. In fact, one of the reasons they're moving to Arizona is so that spring training games won't be on so early in the morning on the west coast.

May would be good for me, but we'll be done with baseball by then. Still, that doesn't mean you can't get a tour of the academy.

45maggie1944
Feb 29, 2008, 7:47 pm

#38 Sandragon - so you can be in charge of where we shall meet, eh? in Victoria, that is. I think if we do this on Saturday Monohex and I can ride the boat up and back in one day. I am not speaking for him, but he did say he is carless and big travel was probably not a good option for him.

Or, we could decide you and Katylit could ride the boat to Seattle and hook up there and bring Montana in on it.

*leaves to search for Montana's user name*

I just noticed I keep overlooking Jasper who is also in Seattle. Sorry. OK, I'm going to try to actually keep track. Maybe we Pac NW types should just start a different thread and the California folks can have this one. Meet me over there.

62mrgrooism
Mar 9, 2008, 10:37 pm

I'm up for it. I've been MIA because I've been planning and hosting a big 75th Anniversary of King Kong gathering in NYC, where we showed the original Kong on the big screen at Houston Street's FILM FORUM 75 years to the day of the Premiere at Radio City Music Hall!!!

What a blast!

If you feel like peeking in at the festivities, go to http://newboards.kongisking.net/perl/gforum.cgi?forum=17; and browse some of the topics. There are some great pics of GDers Alanna Smithee, Jewels, Lord Darrow and his lovely wife Lady Darrow. Eventually I'll make the time to write up a full account.

ANYWAY, that's why I was AWOL here. PLUS I started a new job, but more on that elsewhere or else I'll NEVER get to the point!

I'd love to run up to Boston for a weekend gathering, and would also love to have one down here in NYC.

Are we definitely all doing this on the same day? I would think staggering the dates would allow folks to travel and go to more than one gathering!

BTW, I'll be spending quite a bit of time in Washington DC over the next four months, as well as making trips to Philly, Williamsburg, VA and Baltimore, so hopefully I can meet some of you there!

63maggie1944
Mar 19, 2008, 11:39 am

It seems to be pretty well settled that the Pacific Northwest crew will be meeting in Seattle on August 9. I think I can speak for everyone in saying that any and all Green Dragoneers are welcome. If you want info on housing, meeting places, bookstores, etc. come read the Pac NW thread. A couple of us are trying to help find good places to stay.

WooooHoooo!

Yeah Dockweiler Beach and fire...more fire :)

I'm up for anything. The woodsiest (is that a word?) place I've been in the city is Franklin Canyon Park....
