60.Stinging Trees and Wait-A-Whiles Confessions of a Rainforest Biologist by William Laurance 4 stars
Reread. This was one of my favorite reads in the summer of 2008. The author tells about his time doing research in the dwindling rainforests of Queensland, Australia. I love memoirs and even long biographies because I find people and why they do what they do very interesting. Books are a good way to satisfy my curiousity, cause the neighbors don't like me spying on them. Just kidding!!!

Hi Joanne!! Thanks for the welcome!!

3 day weekends are great!!, but they mess me up!! I keep thinking today is Sunday!! When I got to the grocery store this morning I was looking for the booth that sells hot shaved ham and buns. It is only set up on sundays mornings after the church services. silly me!! :-} Good thing I remembered it was really Saturday before I asked someone.

Hi Stasia! I feel for you!! I'm glad that now I only have to fill in once in awhile. I hate 3rd shift and actually get sick if I have to work it for an extended period of time. Do you like working nights? I know some of the ladies where I work do like 3rds and I am eternally grateful for them, because they are the ones that show up for everyone of their shifts!! Some of the others call in for the silliest reasons, then I'm lucky if someone else is willing to come in for a few hours or if 1st shift is willing to come in early.

Boo Hoo it's Sunday!! The weekend is almost over!! On the upside I have almost finished another book!!

Finished raking the yard. Handed out candy to the little Buzz Light Years and puppies and lions and a witch or two. Even gave candy to the older kids, but one I found a bit disturbing. 2 girls about the age of 13 were dressed in French Maid outfits and 1 was showing more than just cleavage. 1st What parent allows their teenage daughter to run around in a costume like that!!!! AND 2nd if you think YOU are old enough to show YOUR boobs You are too old to be asking for candy!!! I just don't get it!!

While I was waitng for the trick or treaters I finished:

Hi Ladies!!! Hope everyone is having a good week and finding lots of time to read!!!

I'm working on 2 books right now and will have to start 2 more. Right now I'm reading The Jungle Book and Wisconsin's Own Twenty Remarkable Homes.
The Jungle book is another one I missed when I was growing up. It's strange that I remember very little of what I read when I was in elementary school and I started reading adult books about 5th or 6th grade. Just recently I decided to look through 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up. Now I'm going back and reading what I missed when I was a kid and enjoying myself.
Wisconsin's Own Twenty Remarkable Homes is about 20 well recognized historic homes in Wisconsin. I like looking at buildings, especially houses and always wish I could go inside and lookout to see what the view is from inside. I think I will read this one 1 house at a time to savor it.
Then yesterday my supervisor, who thinks of herself as a hard, tough,mean b---h, but is really a nice funny funny funny lady brought 2 books that she just finished, because she wanted to share them with me. She can't be mean. Mean people don't like to share. So now I also have The Guardian and For One More Day and I'm doing the Middlemarch group read. It's a good thing that I don't like TV. :-}

37tjblue
Nov 2, 2010, 3:04 pm

Hi Porua!!

Hi Marie!!

I think it's strange that I wasn't encouraged by some adult at school to read some of these, especially since I spent most of my free time in the library helping the librarian. I wonder if there were YA books like there are now? I only remember reading VC Andrews. My parents didn't really push us to read. We read what was around the house or what could be ordered throught the mail from the library in Appleton about 20 minutes away. It's funny to think that we got the books through the mail instead of going there. Now I go to Appleton about twice a week and sometimes visit the 3 libraries that are in that area, even though I can order the books online.

Well it's time to move away from the computer. I'm going to try to walk, chew gum and read all at the same time. :->

38bonniebooks
Nov 3, 2010, 7:29 am

I didn't read most of the children's books on that list either when I was a kid, so it was so much fun to read many of them to my two sons. And, of course, I have the excuse of being a reading teacher for continuing to read them. ;-)

Hi Tammy!

I miss having kids around to read to... but still love many children's books. I buy them for my grandkids and use the excuse I must pre-read them to make sure they are good ones! ;)

We have a 90+ year old artist in town who wrote and illustrated children's books many years ago. A small publisher in the area is re-printing some of her books now. Beautiful art and good old-fashioned stories. We all love her and her books... adults and, oh yeah, children too.

43tjblue
Edited: Nov 11, 2010, 4:56 pm

Hi Claudia!! Aww that's wonderful to know a local author/illustrator!! One of the things I love most about children's books are the pictures!!! Shopping for books for the little ones in my family is the most fun for me. I could spend all day just looking!!! One of my most favorite children's book is Micawber by John Lithgow. It's about a squirrel who live in Central Park and he loves art.

63.The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling

Yay! only 12 more to go!!!

Computer is on the fritz at home, so my internet access will be limited to the times I can get down to the library. :-{ Strange how a person can get used to having it at home. Oh, well I will have more time for reading and cleaning.
On top of that another bad night at work. New client cut herself for the 2nd time since arriving. This time she had to be taken to the emergency room for 9 stitches. I haven't worked with someone who cuts before. Just don't get it. Not sure what to think. Really I'm not supposed to think about it, just deal with it.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend and finding lots of time to read!! I'm still working on WI Own 20 Home, Middlemarch, and The Guardian.

53tjblue
Nov 12, 2010, 9:16 am

Hi Louanne!!

Hi Stasia!! The Guardian was ok. It was kind of cheesy, not one of his better ones; but it was an easy way to pass the time. My supervisor gave it to me to read, so I figured I better read it.

I started The Brave the new one by Nicholas Evans. I picked it up because I liked the cover. I read the 1st 30 pgs and the last 3 pgs. Just can't get into it ,so back to the library it goes. The main character is an 8 year old boy in England. The first 30 pages are about his upper middleclass dysfunctional family, his bed wetting, his sister who wants to be an actress, and his obssesion with western TV shows. At about page 25 he is told he is going to be sent to a boarding school. The school is for kids whose families aren't quite rich enough to send them to one of the best. The site where the school is set, was in the past an asylum. The front of the property is remodeled to make a good appearance, but the rest of the facility is rundown and the beds and tables etc. are left over from the asylum. I read The Horse Whisperer an liked it ok, but I don't get this one.

Hi Stasia.

No such luck. I'm starting to wonder if ADD is contagious. I can't seem to focus on any one book, or any 1 task for that matter. Just gave up on another one called Prairie by Greg Tobin. Still working on Wisconsin's Own and started For The Love of Books: 115 Celebrated Writers On The Books They Love The Most by Ronald B. Shwartz. Luckily both of these can be read a little bit at a time. Also still plugging along with Middlemarch, but not keeping up to the group. And started I Hate You Don't Leave Me: Understanding The Borderline Personality. Our head supervisor said this is a helpful book for us caregivers.
Well I'm still a bit ansty, so I'm off to walk the dogs. Hope everyone is having a good weekend!!!

Hi Ladies!! Quotes that remind of LT are my favorite. I'm starting my quote journal today, so I will have more to share.

I have to pick out a good book for today. I'm going to have such an easy day at work that I almost feel guilty. I have to drive one of the clients halfway to an appointment, drop her off at a meeting spot, then wait for 3 hours until she returns. Since there is nothing I can take along to work on, I have 3 hours to read, have lunch and maybe take a walk. and I will be done by 6p!! OH, how lucky I am!!

73tjblue
Edited: Nov 22, 2010, 9:25 am

Hi Ladies!! Well, I get going so I can let you know.

Hi Louanne!
I'm glad to hear that you liked it. I have to hurry up and read it because it was a short loan. I've tried the playaway twice now and I think audio books just aren't for me. I miss to much of what's going on. I found it a little bit useful when I read The Secret Garden. I alternated between listening and reading, which helped me finish the book faster.

Haven't visited LT too much in the last week or so. I was trying to finish a book or 2 so I could make 75, but life gets in the way. I'll be happy if I come close though.

74L-Anne
Nov 22, 2010, 9:26 am

I use the playaway (or any audio book) when my hands are occupied - chopping vegetables, washing dishes, folding laundry etc. But I much prefer the printed books too. I decided to give the audio books one more try because of my crazy schedule, but I do think some books are easier to listen to than others. How far into the book are you now? I'm not finished it yet.

75tjblue
Nov 22, 2010, 9:44 am

I'm just starting. Lately there have been to many things to keep me from reading and I'm starting to wonder if ADD is contagious. I can't focus and can't finish anything. That's odd for me. Well, I have three days off this weekend and that will help to get me back on track with things.

65. Wisconsin's Own Twenty Remarkable Homes by M. Caren Connolly and Louis Wasserman 5 stars
This book lists and tells about 20 well recognized historical homes, built between the mid 1800's to the mid 1900's. Some where built as permanent residence and some where vacation homes. The book describes each home, tells about the architects and tells about the families the homes were built for. It also tells some of how each one has been restored and if they are still privately owned and lived in or if they are now museums. One home is in Neenah about 20 minutes from where I live, but is still a private residence.

I'm half way through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and likeing it. It's interesting and flows well. There are just a small part or two that are unpleasant, but sometimes life is unpleasant. after this one I wiil go on to the next one. Strangely #2 has less holds on it than #3. Hope Everyone had a wonderful holiday!!! I worked 1st shift, so I got to share the holiday meal with the residents. The 3rd shift person prepared everything, lucky me, and it was delicious!! After work my family and I visited my uncles and we got to eat again!!! So we had a wonderful day!!

Hi Laura!! If you like architecture and old houses, you will like this book. And lucky you there are several of the houses listed are in or close to Milwaukee. The Pabst mansion and 2 others in Milwaukee. One each in Delvan, Fox Point and Lake Geneva and a few in around Madison. I liked the book so much I will definitely get it from the library again or maybe buy it.

Hi Stasia!! I'm enjoying my weekend off. Hope things are going well with you!!

66.The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
4 stars. This one wasn't what I expected and I liked it. It kept me interested all the way through and all of the characters didn't get a happy ending. 9 more to go. Hope I can make it.

Up nextAn Eagle Named Freedom. I'm a sucker for stories about how peoples lives are influenced by animals. Still working on several others including Middlemarch.

Hi Tamara!!

Hi Stasia!!

Hi Claudia!!

Happy Tuesday!! Thanks for visiting me. I am again with out the internet at home. Oh Well!! More time to read. The funny thing though my son showed me how to view LT on my cell phone. Teenagers are good for somethings!! I at least can read messages, but I can't post. So the ladies at the library will be seeing more of me. Hope everyone is having a good week!!

Hi Marie! Yea! I liked GWTDT, it was a fast read for me, so I will be reading the rest of them. Just have to finish up some of the others that I'm working on.

67.An Eagle Named Freedom by Jeff Guidry 4 stars. Simple writing, but a touching story. This is another great one for anybody who likes stories about animals and their human friends. Only took me a few hours to finish it.

Hi, Tammy! Thanks for coming to visit me. Aren't kids so clever? I tend to read threads on my iPad now so I'm not posting as much either, because I Can't type as fast on it. I keeping I'll get on my computer, but never seem to want to enough-I'm always lurking though. :-)

I'm caught up with you now, Tammy. I don't think you have ADD. I think it's called "the holidays are upon us once again." I spent two ridiculous hours looking for Christmas cards today. I ended up going to three different places because I am so wishy-washy these days.

I think you'll make your challenge this year. Go, Tammy, Go!!! If not, there's always next year. ;-)

I also like the Lisbeth Salander books and movies. They are not what I consider "my kind" of books, but I literally scarfed them down like they were apple pie or something. Actually that's not a bad analogy with the tart and sweet tastes together. Lisbeth is one of the most moral characters I've encountered. I even liked her weirdness!

Hi Bonnie! I'm always lurking too!!

Hi Donna! I hope the holidays don't get too stressful for you. Luckily for me Christmas at home is pretty low key. Church, presents for Ty and a meal with my uncles and sister and her family. At work is another story. In years past the company hosted a party at a banquet hall for all of the residents and their families. This year, not so. Each house is having open house for it's own residents. They get to invite their families and case workers. So I need to get my butt in gear planning a meal and buying gifts. But all of the work is worth it for them to have a nice holiday!!!

Hi Stasia! An Eagle Named Freedom is a new one. I think someone, maybe Claudia, got as an ER book a few months ago.

I'm liking using my cellphone for viewing LT almost more than the computer. I'm a multi-tasking nut. Now I can keep up with you guys while I'm vacuuming, cooking, when I can't sleep, when I'm pretending to watch sports with the guys. About the only time it's not a good idea is washing dishes or giving the dogs a bath. :-}

Hi Stasia!!

Hi Claudia!!

Work and everything else is preventing me from getting down to library to catch up with everyone. Haven't even been reading a whole lot. We alot of snow this weekend, so we have been shoveling. My next door neighbor is so very nice. He gave us his little snow blower, because he bought a bigger one. Then there was so much snow drifted this morning that he did our whole block and my driveway and the lady across the street with his big snow blower.

70.Uncle Remus Stories by Joel Chandler Harris from 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up

71.Await Your Reply by Dan Chaon 3 stars This one was a bit strange. didn't really like it.

106bonniebooks
Dec 12, 2010, 6:12 pm

I liked Await Your Reply because it was strange, and because I don't usually like thrillers--so gave it a higher rating for that alone. But I can understand why many people wouldn't like it all that much. I, myself, was a victim because of the event/words on the very first page.

Hi Tammy! I just fondled my copy of The Mirror Cracked earlier today - funny coincidence, hey?!?

I'm jealous you guys have that much snow - I've only got an inch or two, and it's mostly a slippery slushy mess. :( Hopefully we'll get some fresh white stuff for Christmas, it just doesn't feel right without it.

I'm struggling to finish the last 2 books for the 1010 Challenge (because I have to read them I don't want to - you know how that goes!) and get some library books read that will be due very soon. My copy of Wisconsin's Own: Twenty Remarkable Homes is sitting in my library pile begging to be read, thanks to you! Can't wait for 2011 to hit when there will be unlimited "free" reading time!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Hi Everybody!! Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!!! Mine was quiet and uneventful, just the way I like it. Haven't had much chance to get caught up with everyone. The library was closed 4 days over Christmas and will be closed 4 days over New Year's. :-{ I keep thinking about how much I'm missing and wondering how many have started 2011 threads. I haven't checked over there yet.

74.River's End Northwest Destiny Vol. Three by Bill Gulick. Finished up this series. These were rereads for me. 3.5 stars I liked them better whern I read them the first time, but they were still good this time around too.

I'm working on #75, one in the series that the TV show Bones is based on. The title is eluding me. I picked it because it's not too long and it is one that has been on my shelf at home for awhile. I won it in the summer reading program a few summers ago. It's starting out an easy, but interesting enough read.

Hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year's!!
