I think this is a short story by one of the science fiction masters - Heinlein or Asimov, maybe.
I can't remember how Mr. Vincent gets transported back in time, but he is stuck there, and so makes the best of it.

This is a minor plot point from The Door Into Summer by Robert Heinlein. Graduate student Leonard Vincent tries out the time machine, never returns.

Thank you very much!
I can usually find these things, but it takes persistance.

There is a similar plot device in A Tale of Time City by Diana Wynne Jones, where the bad guy in the distant future is sentenced to imprisonement in the past, and becomes da Vinci. You might enjoy that one, though it is definitely not the one you describe.

The first thing I thought of was Twice in Time by Manly Wade Wellman, which was a mash-up of two short stories. But the hero there is Leo Thrasher, not Leonard Vincent.

I'll check them both out. I love the sub-genre and the re-tellings.
