Recommendation: The Embroidery Design Sourcebook
Why: one of the embroidery books in my recommendations collection (I'll keep better track of these in the future)
Recommendation rating: **
For me there are three kinds of craft books: those with projects you want to copy, those that explain a technique in great enough detail that you can create things yourself, and ones that show examples of other things people have done. The best books for me currently are the detailed technique books and it's the best of those that I put in my recommendations collection.
This book is the third kind, photos and sketches of inspirations from various cultures around the world, with pictures of contemporary art work inspired by the cultural references. These books just aren't useful to me at the present. I don't know how to be inspired in my own creation without worrying about copying what someone else has done. So this didn't work for me.

Recommendation: Flight Dreams by Michael Craft
Why: either a Michael Nava or Joseph Hanson book
Recommendation rating: **
All of these are mysteries with gay detectives where the mystery is at the forefront of the book, but in the background is an on-going story about the detective's relationship. The problem is that both Michael Nava and Joseph Hanson are excellent writers, and Michael Craft, at least in this first book, is not. So I was only barely able to skim my way through this one to find out whodunit.

Recommendation: Barack and Michelle: Portrait of an American Marriage
Why: The mystery of Lewis Carroll : Discovering the whimsical, thoughtful, and sometimes lonely man who created 'Alice in Wonderland'
Recommendation rating: *
I simply don't get the connection.
