The Talk Topic sub-search searches group names as well as titles. For example:
http://www.librarything.com/search.php?search=collectors&searchtype=4&se...
Matches every single Bug Collectors post ever. This is because it's searching the group name + topic title rather than just topic title.

I don't know, is it a bug? Take this search:
http://www.librarything.com/search.php?search=coptic&searchtype=4&search...
If you didn't have the group, you might not understand there was a group.
Hmmm. I'm leaning in your direction.

Well, you can find there's a group by looking in the Groups matches. How about this for an idea? Move the current Groups search section under Talk (so you have Messages, Topics, Groups - I think that would probably be in the order of most frequently used). Then the Talk link could include the group names but you could filter them in or out by clicking on the sub-items.
Also, I don't mind the group name being on the result page for the Topics search - just being part of that matching.

Can you give me a situation where it does harm, though? I mean, were you really interested in posts that had the word "collectors" in them?

4> I'll try to remember the search that made me annoyed enough to report it.
Playing devil's advocate - since you haven't given a way for us to limit a search to a particular group, searching group name has the benefit of something like:
http://www.librarything.com/search.php?search=facebook++%22bug+collectors%22&...
or
http://www.librarything.com/search.php?search=facebook++-%22bug+collectors%22&am...
Of course, it's a bit of an imprecise mallet.

I have. Search from within the group. I can't think of a good UI to limit by an arbitrary group you're not starting from.

I've dropped the group name. It will take a while to get where it needs to go.

Ah, gracias! I tried it a while back after you had switched it over and I could have sworn it didn't at the time. Either I was mistaken or it's been corrected since then. In any case, it works great now.

Yes, it's a sticky wicket, indeed. The least-bad way I can think of is the way google does it:
group:"Bug Collectors"
Of course, search isn't big on qualifiers like that. Wish it was but I know that's yet another giant ball of programming (and bugs!)
7> Excellent. Thanks again.
