When I was little, I used to get fact sheets about animals in the mail. I can't remember if they came monthly or what, but I remember the pamphlet is always basically a white sheet of glossy paper, folded in half, with the cover a big color photo of an animal, and then the inside and back would be facts/information about the animal. I remember these being very popular when I was little, and some kids I used to babysit had them as well, but now I can't find them. I think they were from National Geographic or Eyewitness Books, but I'm not having any luck, and I'm hoping some parents on here will know what I'm talking about!

I had a subscription to ZooBooks, but that sounds more substantial than what you're talking about, since those were magazines, not pamphlets.

Oh, wow, we had some of those (just the binder and free samples they sent to try to get you to subscribe, but I remember well.)

If it's what I'm thinking of, I'm pretty sure it *wasn't* NatGeo. It might've been Eyewitness, I can call up a visual of their logo on the binder.

I sort of filed them in the same category as those square cards with an animal picture on the front and stats on the back that you could get a special green file box for, but I can't figure out the right terms to Google to find those, either (were they through the NWF?) I'm going to keep thinking, may get back to you.

Oh, I think I know what you're talking about! I had one when I was a kid. It was called Wildlife Facts on File. I remember you would get a big black binder with a giraffe on it and every month you would get a new pack of sheets. You sorted them into the binded by classes (mammal, bird, reptile, etc.) I'm not sure if you could still get them delivered monthly like you used to, but I've definitely seen complete sets in libraries and such. Hope this helps!

Thanks, everyone, I posted the same question to my FB wall (thinking some of my friends got the same thing when they were kids), and a friend recognized them as well. She gave me the only publishing info printed on the pack (imp bv/imp wildlife fact file), and googling has led me to believe they're not being published anymore. :(

It appears that it has been replaced by Wildlife Explorer, with updated and larger pamphlets/cards. I have a complete set of the Wildlife Fact-File which has 11 groups, while the new series has only 9 groups.

Yay, thank you so much! I've been wanting to get subscriptions to it for my niece and nephew!

Yesterday, totally unexpectedly, I received a free pack of the Wildlife Explorer cards. As I though they are larger then the Wildlife Fact File cards. The Explorer cards are 9 1/8" h x 8 1/4" w (closed) or 15 3/4" (open) while the Fact File cards are 9” h x 6 7/16” w (closed) or 12 3/16” w (open). The Explorer cards are also on slightly heavier and brighter paper stock.

On the Explorer cards the information is rewritten and appears to be standardized: Key Features and Where in the World? On the front; Habitat, Food & Hunting, Breeding, Behavior, Conservation and Did You Know? In the middle; a profile with body details, Creature Comparisons, Vital Statistics and Related Species on back. The older Fact File cards are not standardized; 4 of the 6 have (Name of Species) and Man in place of Behavior and 1 doesn’t have either; 1 has a Special Adaptation feature; the key feature on the back is different for each species.

After comparing the Explorer cards to the Fact File cards I am not able to say which ones I think are better, or even which ones I prefer. Both have features I like and if I didn’t already have a complete set of Fact File cards I would be very tempted to get the Explorer cards.
