Sonya, I just read The Last Stand by Philbrick, and enjoyed it very much. I'll look forward to learning what you think of Mayflower, though I suspect it will end up on my TBR pile.

I *love* the Sandra Boynton books, and so does my 2-year-old, Charlie. Brown Bear, Brown Bear is another household favorite, along with Polar Bear, Polar Bear. You can also sort of sing the Martin books, to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" - Charlie seems to like reading/singing them that way. :)

Mayflower: first thoughts

It's nonfiction, and taken from primary source material, so what Philbrick weaves together as the story is really real, and he writes it well. I had no idea about so much of it. It's not the 3rd grade pilgrim story I learned, it's not the hate whitey story, it's more what really happened -- Indian tribes and colonists working together sometimes and against each other sometimes as they all vied for political power, land, and supplies. And the colonies were working against each other sometimes too, or trying to incite unrest between colonial/tribal pacts.

It appeals to my survivalist bent, since the Plymouth settlers rolled up to America not knowing if their seeds would even grow in the soil.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear was my go-to storytime book when I was a children's librarian. I learned the ASL signs for each animal, so in addition to doing the noises the animals made, the kids could learn the signs for each animal.

#12 -- What a great storytime tip! I'll have to do that some time.

Just finished Love Drugged, by the brother of a friend of a friend. The gist is it's a YA novel about a teen who tries an experimental drug to make him not gay. I thought it was pretty great -- not preachy, some good juxtaposition with a friend who has ADHD who goes off ritalin. I'd recommend it.

I'm adding Love Drugged to my tbr in 2011 list.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Conor was given Polar Bear, Polar Bear What do you Hear? by Bill Martin jr and Eric Carle for his birthday.

Happy birthday for today.

I did baby led weaning with Conor, and had the Gill Rapley book out of the library for ages though I never actually read it properly - I looked at bits but I mostly looked it up online. There's a website called babyledweaning.com with discussion forums - my stepsister was one of the top 10 most active partipants for a bit and did BLW with her two.

Eep! Thanks! I spent my birthday laid out with a nasty back injury (so much for stooping over to pick up the baby).

marieke54, I did like Quicksilver. I LOVED A Diamond Age by the same author, and still haven't been able to get through Cryptonomicon, and I found Quicksilver to be somewhere in the middle. It jumps around, time-wise, which is what I have trouble with. But it's historical in nature, and some of it takes place where I live, so it's extra awesome for that.

I hope you are feeling much better. Spending your birthday laid out with a nasty back injury doesn't sound like much fun.
