I just did this and when I clicked submit it didn't work. So here I go again and hopefully there won't be two of these threads. Okay I will be doing a read-a-thon on Saturday Feb. 5 to Sunday Feb. 6th. The start time is 8 am on Saturday and will end on Sunday at 8 am EST. You can Google to figure out the time for your location.

I will post the template and memes sometime tomorrow. I am going to try and post all of the memes at once. If you plan to join us please post here. Let me know if you plan to post here or some place else. Please include a link and I will add it next to your name. Even if you can't join us for the whole time that is alright. Join us when it is convenient for you.

Hi there, I'm in. I have been watching the readathons since they began this year and have been itching to join in.

It will start 2am sunday morning for me in Hamilton, New Zealand. Not sure if I will get up at 2 but will certainly spend the day reading. Look forward to this readathon. I have a stack of books beside the bed so a good excuse to read some more.

I'll try. I can't in the evening, or I will be murdered and you will find my dead body floating in the East River. (Suzanne from Brooklyn)

Then on Sunday, I can switch to a write-a-thon!! Yippeee......... (well, not really, but..)

Feb 4, 2011, 3:31 am

I probably won't be around for the earlier bit of the readathon as we're out during the day but will be there hopefully in the late evening/early hours my time.

Count me in! Stocking up on food supplies today for the impending snow storm, read-a-thon and Super Bowl!

I'm in, since it ends well before the Super Bowl party we'll be attending. :)

Altho I will say, I should stop doing these things because they always appear doomed for me. I seem to read less, rather than more, because everything else around me goes pear-shaped....

I may be around for part of it tomorrow evening, but I'm working 10-5 so... that cuts into a big chunk (though if our internet isn't working too swell (like it has been off and on lately), I may attack some of my professional reading and count it in the read-a-thon =D besides - isn't that what people think Librarians get to do all day? (NOT!) LOL!)

Last-minute decision here -- the weather is dreary and I can't work in the yard, so I'll read and work inside instead.

Margaret from Virginia.

Will be posting in this thread.

Is it OK to put my first meme here? I'm going to get my oil changed at 8 am EST and will be reading in the waiting room. If not, just say so and I'll edit it to a different post when I get back.

THE OPENING MEME

1. Where are you going to be reading today? At the Exxon station and in my living room.

2. What book have you chosen to kick off the read-a-thon? Keep Your Car Running Practically Forever by Mort Schultz.

3. Do you read more books written by male or female authors? Male, by a big margin.

4. Do you have any books already lined up for the next 24 hours? Or maybe a few possibilities in mind? After *Your Car...*, my list reads Our Man in Havana by Graham Greene; "House of Flowers", a short story by Truman Capote; Dr. Sax by Jack Kerouac; and On the Bright Side, I'm Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God by Louise Rennison. Then Blood Wedding by Federico Garcia Lorca, but I doubt I'll get that far.

5. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon? Anything you particularly want to finish, or a target number of hours? I'll be happy if I finish the Greene and the Capote and get 50 pages in with the Kerouac.

6. If you're an old hand at this read-a-thon lark, what's your top tip for a great read-a-thon? If you're a newbie, what do you hope to get out of the day? I'm a newbie and hope to finish two books I've been reading for several weeks. I'm going to use a Flylady-type routine of reading for 30-45 minutes, then cleaning house for 15-30 minutes, then back to the books. I hope to have a less crowded bookshelf and a neater house by tomorrow morning.

22Cait86
Feb 5, 2011, 7:51 am

I'm going to post the Opening Meme now too, in preparation for 8:00!

THE OPENING MEME

1. Where are you going to be reading today? My bedroom

2. What book have you chosen to kick off the read-a-thon? The Shape of Him by Gill Schierhout, which I need to review for Belletrista

3. Do you read more books written by male or female authors? Female, most definitely

4. Do you have any books already lined up for the next 24 hours? Or maybe a few possibilities in mind? After finishing The Shape of Him, I'll move on to Visitation by Jenny Erpenbeck. If I finish that, it will be on to either Generation X by Douglas Coupland, or Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri (but this might change)

5. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon? Anything you particularly want to finish, or a target number of hours? I'd like to read for a full 12 hours, with breaks obviously, and I'd like to finish those first two books, so that I can review them tomorrow.

6. If you're an old hand at this read-a-thon lark, what's your top tip for a great read-a-thon? If you're a newbie, what do you hope to get out of the day? This is only my second Read-a-thon, but I loved my first experience, and hope to have another great day!

Feb 5, 2011, 7:56 am

Good Morning, Good Afternoon, & Good Evening to all our read-a-thoners!! Welcome Margaret. It is fine to post the Opening Meme now. Get it out of the way so you can actually concentrate on reading. I am going to post mine too so that I don't have to worry about it later.

THE OPENING MEME

1. Where are you going to be reading today? Most likely in my living room/tv room, possibly with my cat on my lap.

2. What book have you chosen to kick off the read-a-thon? The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory

3. Do you read more books written by male or female authors? I have to say female but maybe an equal amount of both.

4. Do you have any books already lined up for the next 24 hours? Or maybe a few possiblities in mind? I have two other books to read if I get bored with my The Other Boleyn Girl. I have Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay & To Hold the Crown by Jean Plaidy

5. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon? Anything you particularly want to finish, or a target number of hours? I want to read for at least 12 hours total. I would love to finish at least one of my books today and that would be the Other Boleyn Girl.

6. If you're an old hand at this read-a-thon lark, what's your top tip for a great read-a-thon? If you're a newbie, what do you hope to get out of the day? I am becoming an old hand at the read-a-thons and have learned that you just need to enjoy yourself and not to worry about how many pages you read or how many hours you actually get to put in reading. I am hoping to finish the books or to at least make a dent into them so that I can start working on the actual books I own.

Okay everyone only about 5 min. before the official start. So see you in a few hours!! HAPPY READING ALL!!

I haven't quite begun reading yet, but I'll be starting in the next half hour or so, so I'll start with the opening meme:

THE OPENING MEME

1. Where are you going to be reading today?

Probably on my couch

2. What book have you chosen to kick off the read-a-thon?

I'll probably keep reading on my January ER book, My Korean Deli by Ben Ryder Howe.

3. Do you read more books written by male or female authors?

Fiction-wise, it would be female; non-fiction-wise it would be male.

4. Do you have any books already lined up for the next 24 hours? Or maybe a few possibilities in mind?

I'm also reading a NetGalley copy of The Good Daughter by Jasmin Darznik

5. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon? Anything you particularly want to finish, or a target number of hours?

I should be able to finish My Korean Deli today and make good progress on the other book. I don't want to set a target time because so far I'm not all that thrilled with my ER book so it's going slower than my normal pace.

6. If you're an old hand at this read-a-thon lark, what's your top tip for a great read-a-thon? If you're a newbie, what do you hope to get out of the day?

The first time I participated, I got too caught up in trying to post every hour which really slowed down my progress on reading. I'd rather read awhile, and then post my progress when I take a break when I want to take one rather than having to stop every hour.

**Edited to correct HTML code gone awry.

I'm going to try to post every hour, only because I find the short reading breaks increase my ability to read for the full 12 hours.

Comment: I am enjoying The Other Boleyn Girl a lot and don't want to stop reading. Just that my eyes need a break from reading. I am glad for the recommendation by an LT member ( I can't remember who it was right now) I would never have picked this book up on my own.

I wanted to post after the first hour, but waited 'til someone else did so I could see what you meant by "posting time" and "menu". I decided to walk home from the Exxon station because they're running behind, so that took 20 minutes away from the 8-9 am reading hour. (Can't complain about adding 20 minutes of outdoor exercise, though, even if my face feels frozen!)

I'd like to finish at least 2 books that I've already started. So far, one is done!

Haven't started reading yet, but I will in this next hour. Had some other things to get done this morning :)

6. If you're an old hand at this read-a-thon lark, what's your top tip for a great read-a-thon? If you're a newbie, what do you hope to get out of the day? I've done a few, but my advice is to just have fun while reading. Not to force yourself to stay up 24 hours to read. I think it's important to get rest when you need it.

5. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon? Anything you particularly want to finish, or a target number of hours?

I'd like to finish The Queen's Fool as I only have 60 pages left. Finish a graphic novel because, well, it's graphic and start a couple of others.

6. If you're an old hand at this read-a-thon lark, what's your top tip for a great read-a-thon? If you're a newbie, what do you hope to get out of the day?

Okay, I'm ready to get started.

THE OPENING MEME

1. Where are you going to be reading today? Mainly at home, although I'll probably go to the barbershop this afternoon and bring my Kindle with me.

2. What book have you chosen to kick off the read-a-thon? Egypt on the Brink: From Nasser to Mubarak

3. Do you read more books written by male or female authors? Male, although the number of books I've read by female authors has increased the past couple of years, thanks to LT, the books I've reviewed for Belletrista, and the books I've read that have made the Orange Prize longlist.

4. Do you have any books already lined up for the next 24 hours? Or maybe a few possibilities in mind? Egypt on the Brink: From Nasser to Mubarak by Tarek Osman (Kindle) and All About H. Hatterr by G.V. Desani (paperback).

5. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon? Anything you particularly want to finish, or a target number of hours? I'm coming off of a long and tiring work week, so I don't have any specific goals in terms of pages or number of hours. I'd be pleased if I finished one book today, but I wouldn't be disappointed if I didn't.

6. If you're an old hand at this read-a-thon lark, what's your top tip for a great read-a-thon? If you're a newbie, what do you hope to get out of the day? This should be a fun activity, and not a competitive one. Take breaks for naps, meals, etc. whenever you feel the need.

Comments: This book has captured me and I really don't want to stop. I hope to finish this book within the next hour or so, baring any major interruptions.

Lynda, The Other Boleyn Girl is fascinating. I have found myself laughing out loud and also making comments such as 'Anne you are such a bitch.' 'Mary just stand up to her.' I know I will be looking for more of her books at the library. Can't wait to see what you think of The Queen's Fool.

Everyone looks like they are having fun. I have perfect day for just staying inside and reading. It is a wet day here in Pennsylvania. Just a day to catch up on my reading and to also get done some house work. I'm still taking down Christmas Decorations.

About ready to start reading. Had a hectic day so far - looking forward to some down time. Yay reading! :D

THE OPENING MEME

1. Where are you going to be reading today?
Sitting on my big fluffy chair in my living room.

2. What book have you chosen to kick off the read-a-thon?
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

3. Do you read more books written by male or female authors?
Never really noticed, probably the same for each.

4. Do you have any books already lined up for the next 24 hours? Or maybe a few possibilities in mind?
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld and possibly starting Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice

5. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon? Anything you particularly want to finish, or a target number of hours?
I'd just like to get about 3 hours or so of reading time. Should probably finish my first book in that time.

6. If you're an old hand at this read-a-thon lark, what's your top tip for a great read-a-thon? If you're a newbie, what do you hope to get out of the day?
Newbie here - I'd just like to have fun reading and reading about what others are reading. Always looking for book recommendations!

Joining you for the last 3 hours.

Luci in London, UK, where it's now 10 pm (5 hours ahead of EST) - We went out before 12 and although I tried to read on the bus to and from where we going it wasn't very successful. I read a little between our arrival at home and going up to get my younger son to bed, and got downstairs about 9.45 pm.

72elkiedee
Edited: Feb 5, 2011, 5:41 pm

1. Where are you going to be reading today?

My current reading pile is:

Carson McCullers, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter
P L Travers, Mary Poppins Comes Back
Eleanor Catton, The Rehearsal
Kader Abdolah, The House of the Mosque

Barbara Pym, A Glass of Blessings
Joolz Denby, The Curious Mystery of Miss Lydia Larkin and the Widow Marvell
Susan Maushart The Winter of Our Disconnect
Margaret Atwood, Writing with Intent

2. What book have you chosen to kick off the read-a-thon?

I'm reading from all of them in turn. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is the top book in my pile and the one I have read most from today, but I read 60 pages of it before the start of the Readathon, and may not read that much more of it before 1 am.

3. Do you read more books written by male or female authors?

Female, I think

4. Do you have any books already lined up for the next 2.5 (12) hours? Or maybe a few possibilities in mind?

See 1

5. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon? Anything you particularly want to finish, or a target number of hours?

No set goals, just to chip in and post and to read a little of some of my books.

6. If you're an old hand at this read-a-thon lark, what's your top tip for a great read-a-thon? If you're a newbie, what do you hope to get out of the day?

I guess I'm an old hand, no real tips other than enjoy yourself and read what you feel like when you feel like - for me it's the sharing an otherwise solitary activity that's the fun bit.

Halfway (12 Hour) Meme:

1. What are the titles of the books you have read so far?

Carson McCullers, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter
P L Travers, Mary Poppins Comes Back
Eleanor Catton, The Rehearsal
Kader Abdolah, The House of the Mosque

Barbara Pym, A Glass of Blessings
Joolz Denby, The Curious Mystery of Miss Lydia Larkin and the Widow Marvell
Susan Maushart The Winter of Our Disconnect

2. What are you reading right now?

The Winter of our Disconnect

3. What is the least favorite book you have ever read and why?

Ever, I'm not sure - An American Death by Norman Mailer is pretty vile, and was on the course list for America in the 60s and 70s more than 20 years ago. And I read the whole thing.

4. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-Thon?

I'm enjoying most of the pile, but my next bit of reading is a chunk of Writing with Intent

5. What have you been doing during breaks?

I've only been at the readathon for just under an hour, and have spent more time online than reading a book

6. Background music: yes or no? If yes, what kind?

Spoken word radio - BBC Radio 4, a discussion of what's happening in Egypt - I just tune in and out depending whether I'm reading or posting or nothing or something else entirely

7. What surprises you most about the Read-a-Thon, so far?

Nothing

8. Do you have any tips for other readers, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?

No!

I missed reading since my last post because my daughter dropped of her puppy and my son went out to dinner. Now I am going to try and start my next book for the next hour or so. I will be reading To hold the Crown by Jean Plaidy and Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay.

Hopefully I will be able to get in at least another hour of reading. I am already feeling tired, not a good sign.

Here is my review for The Other Boleyn Girl

Halfway (12 Hour) Meme:

1. What are the titles of the books you have read so far?
Our Man in Havana
2. What are you reading right now? Keep Your Car Running Practically Forever
3. What is the least favorite book you have ever read and why? A Wreath for Emmett Till by Marilyn Nelson, because it was so historionic and unreal and downright weird. I wanted real information about him, not some fantasy about him being a WTC fireman. I may have read worse and forgotten about it; this one sticks in my mind because I had such high hopes.
4. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-Thon? "House of Flowers", one of four short stories in a book by Truman Capote. It's set in Haiti, and I love reading about the Caribbean.
5. What have you been doing during breaks? Running errands, housework, eating, reading mail, surfing the 'net.
6. Background music: yes or no? If yes, what kind? Yes, heavy metal (Iron Maiden's "Wicker Man" atm)
7. What surprises you most about the Read-a-Thon, so far? It's even more fun than I expected!
8. Do you have any tips for other readers, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered? Everybody probably does already know this, but reading dissimilar books in a short time period, one after another, is more satisfying than reading two or more that are alike. Next time, I won't plan two books by mid-twentieth century authors in the same readathon. They affect me too deeply, and I need time to reflect on each one after I finish it.

Dresden (can't find right touchstone)

3. What is the least favorite book you have ever read and why?
Geez. Uh, usually I don't keep reading a book if I don't like it, but one that I still have on my TBR shelf that I didn't like at the time is Tristram Shandy. I started it in college for a class and have been on page 74 since then. I do intend to pick it up again at some point, but not any time soon.

4. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-Thon?
I'm looking forward to the end of Still Life - it's so good!

5. What have you been doing during breaks?
Putzing around, 3 loads of laundry, a little online shopping, smooching the cats.

6. Background music: yes or no? If yes, what kind?

Halfway (12 Hour) Meme:

1. What are the titles of the books you have read so far?
The Graveyard Book

2. What are you reading right now?
I only have 30 minutes of The Graveyard Book left but am loving it so much I want to save it up for later. I'll probably move on to Three Seconds, an ER thriller, Doctor Faustus and The Turn of the Screw and the Aspern Papers by Henry James.

3. What is the least favorite book you have ever read and why?
I just started out Three Seconds last night and am 50 pages in so far, and still having a bit of trouble making out what's what and who's who, but it'll probably all start falling into place soon enough.

The second book of Don Quixote it had such a different feel to the first which I loved so was very disappointing (in fact I abandoned it)

Weaveworld without a doubt, brilliant book.
5. What have you been doing during breaks?
Watching TV, doing puzzles, playing computer games, eating, sleeping, household chores and cuddling cats:)
6. Background music: yes or no? If yes, what kind?
Not during this readathon
7. What surprises you most about the Read-a-Thon, so far?
How quickly my eyes got tired and how slowly I'm able to read the nonfiction book.
8. Do you have any tips for other readers, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?
Not really as I don't think I'm doing that well.

I suppose take breaks when you need to and this is supposed to be fun.

#123: What is Weaveworld?

125calm
Feb 6, 2011, 7:36 am

Stasia - From the Amazon sourced descriptions on the book page:-

1) Clive Barker has made his mark on modern fiction by exposing all that is surreal and magical in the ordinary world --- and exploring the profound and overwhelming terror that results. With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror -- a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.

2) WEAVEWORLD is an epic adventure of the imagination. It begins with a carpet in which a world of rapture and enchantment is hiding; a world which comes to life, alerting the dark forces and beginning a desperate battle to preserve the last vestiges of magic which Humankind still has access to. WEAVEWORLD is a book of visions and horrors, a story of quest, titanic struggles, of love and of hope. It is a triumph of imagination and storytelling, an adventure, a nightmare, a promise! 'Barker's fecundity of invention is beyond praise. In a world of hard-bitten horror and originality, Clive Barker dislocates your mind.' THE MAIL ON SUNDAY.

It is also over 700 pages long:)

Very likely, but I'll make some changes in how I take part. Have some shorter books so I actually finish a book and be better prepared generally (as this was an impulsive decision to take part).

I would say the 15th. I wanted to read more in bed but could not keep the eyelids up.

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a reader engaged next time?

4. How many books did you read?

Yup, The Other Boleyn Girl and the one Darryl was reading which I need to scroll back up to for the title about Egypt.

The End-of-Event Meme

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
Hour 16 (11 pm to midnight)

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the next read-a-thon? Make a rule for counting books read. I finished three that I'd already started, and it's important to me to be able to count them, since I'm fighting Mt. TBR so hard.
4. How many books did you read? (see 3 above) The way I count it, three.
5. What were the names of the books you read? Our Man in Havana; Keep Your Car Running Practically Forever; Breakfast at Tiffany's ("and other stories")

I TOTALLY forgot about the read-a-thon. I forgot to star it, and I seemed to forgot it. Then when I was looking for read-a-thons coming soon, I saw there was one yesterday and today and I suddenly remembered. I did read, but I didn't keep track of anything. Man, I can't believe I forgot.
