Carey's wrong about one thing: library-bound books checked out to my careless crowd of middle-schoolers don't make it much past 16 circulations.

I think that is probably more a reflection of your middle-schoolers. I've seen many library books with a full page of stamps and extra pages added. Of course now with card checkout it is hard to tell just how many checkouts a book has at.

nods manypages of stamps on occasion. Stuff like Orwell remains on shelves and in the reserve for decades,
