Anyone read Pegasus by Robin McKinley?

I read probably about the first 15 pages and so far I haven't gotten very into it, I'll admit I was being a cover slut when I bought it! I would've continued reading it but a lot of new books from a series I had been waiting for were released and I set it aside to read those, now I just want to know if it's a good read or if I'd just be wasting my time. No spoilers please! Thanks! :)

It depends on what you like. I love Robin McKinley's writing, so I think it's great, but it's not to everyone's taste.

Also, it's part 1 of 2 and the end is a cliffhanger. Part 2 is supposed to come out sometime next year, I think.

I highly recommend her earlier books, particularly The Hero and Crown. I haven't read Pegasus, though. I've always thought of her as a writer who can get away with the supposed sin of "telling..."

I liked it. I didn't expect to - princesses and all aren't usually my thing.

I thought Pegasus was a very good read. The protagonist is very like Aerin in The Hero and the Crown, in that she is feeling alienated from her court, and that she discovers that she has a greater purpose.
The cliff hanger ending was a bother though.

Very biased opinion, since I love everything Robin McKinley writes, even when it doesn't seems as if the story would work/appeal to me:-)

Thanks everyone for mentioning that it has a cliffhanger ending. I love McKinley too, but I think I'll wait till the second half is out so I can gobble it down in one go :)

I thought it was a "difficult" book. The premise is very strange, the writing wanders all over the place, and then it just stops. It is definitely not my favorite McKinley book, and I was tempted to throw it across the room a few times. If you are not already a fan, don't start with it. I can see that some people might love it though, it's very unique.

I don't know about the "not already a fan" bit. It was the first book by her that I read, and it prompted me to seek out more by her.

I actually liked it better than most recent McKinley, though I can understand the criticisms above, particularly about the rambling. That's something that McKinley has always done to some extent, but I feel that she has really let herself go (or her editor has let her go, or something) in the past four or five books. I wouldn't go so far as to not recommend it for that reason; just go in knowing that it's going to be rambly and end in a cliffhanger, and you may find you really like it. And if you don't like it, don't write off all McKinley on that basis -- try some of her earlier stuff before making that judgement. (I know from McKinley's blog that she hates it when readers say that her early stuff was her best, but I have to admit that I'm one of the people who hold that opinion.)

I agree to an extent, foggidawn. I wanted to love Chalice but it just sort of fizzled and I didn't like Dragonhaven at all. I love Sunshine and Spindle's End, though, and all her earlier books (with the exception of Rose Daughter).
