Type: Fiction
Plot: All I can really remember is that the girl is possibly an orphan and is sent to live at her great-uncle's house, who is absent for most of her stay. She goes exploring at night and to avoid being discovered, she hides in a wardrobe. In the wardrobe, she sees notches marked in the wood, showing the heights of children or teenagers she doesn't know. When she leaves the wardrobe, she finds herself in the past, although she is not immediately aware of this. The children/teenagers she meets are her great-uncle and his siblings.
At the end of the novel, her great-uncle allows her to go to boarding school, which she has always dreamed of going to.
I read this back in the 90s, so this novel was either written then or maybe in the seventies or eighties.
Book's intended audience
10 years + / YA
The cover of the book was blue. It wasn't very long.
Thanks very much for reading! I have been looking for this book for years, so any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thank you! jalual managed to find it for me - I got some of the details wrong, but it's called 'Jessamy' by Barbara Sleigh.

I'm so glad I could help. Barbara Sleigh also wrote the "Carbonel" books about a magical cat that are well-loved and remembered by many people.
