In the late 60's/very early 70's when I was in elementary school, I read a book several times about a young girl who learned to play tennis and then overcame some sort of challenge to become a champion. I recall that the book had a yellow cover and it was probably for an age range of 10-12, if I had to guess. It was a very good book, and I would love to find it again.

What country was it read in? Was it a stand alone book? Or series book? Eg. Fifth Year Friendships at Trebizon by Anne Digby or The Tennis Term at Trebizon by Anne Digby. What kind of "challenge"?

OK now for a search on WorldCat.org. Searched from 1960-1975. Suggestions:

The tennis machine by Helen Hull Jacobs
New York : Scribner, ©1972. A thirteen-year-old girl's personal needs conflict with the rigid guidelines her father feels she must follow to become a tennis champion.

Tennis champ, Evelyn Lunemann
Westchester, Ill., Benefic Press 1972
Although she wants to please her father and win the tennis tournament, Mattie finds a sick child's needs more influential.

Hal, tennis champ by Mike Neigoff
Chicago : Albert Whitman, ©1971.
A young tennis champion learns there are some things more important than winning.

Tennis shoes, Noel Streatfeild
Dent, 1965.

Champions don't cry by Nan Gilbert
New York, Harper 1960
A thirteen-year-old doesn't know if she has what it takes to be a tennis champion but won't quit until she finds out.

"I'm going to be a champion tennis player, " Sally tells her older brother. But Denny isn't so sure. Sally's got a terrible temper. And when she gets mad on the court, look out! Now there's a big tennis tournament coming up. If Sally can only raise enough money to play in it, she'll prove, even to Denny, that she really is a champion. But will she get to play? And if she does, will that temper of hers ruin everything?

Great! I had a hunch that was the one. Nan Gilbert is a good author (I've read A Dog for Joey by her). All I did to find it was search on WorldCat.org using tennis in the keywords, limited to books, juvenile fiction, and the year range mentioned above, and English language, then went through the pages... luckily it was there. :)

You can find copies on abe.com or bookfinder.com, though you may want the specific hardcover edition for that cover.
