I read this probably ca. 1973 plus or minus a year or two and I'm sure I got it through the Scholastic Book Club.

The story involves the sole surviving member of a submarine crew in the Pacific theater. The sub was destroyed by depth charge and there is a vivid scene fairly early of the protagonist crawling into the sub's escape hatch and just barely reaching the surface alive. He washes up on a remote island and has to survive until he is rescued at the end of the book. I don't remember if there were Japanese forces on the island or not or if the book was based on a true story or not. All that really stuck with me was the scene of the hero rising through the water, trying not to go any faster than the bubbles around him and slowly letting the air out of his lungs.

I'm really not sure about this... Robb White Up Periscope! - I've read the book and it was good! But can't recall details enough to tell if it's what you're after. It was published by Scholastic according to amazon...

>3 bookel:, I don't think that's it. There seem to be more than one character in Up Periscope! and the book I remember was mostly about the one guy trying to survive all alone. At first, I thought it might be The Raft by Robert Trumbull, but that was about a minesweeper and there were several survivors. (I may have read it about the same time. This was definitely just one guy alone on an island that, the more I think about it, was probably occupied by the Japanese.

"A young Navy pilot, some battle-tough Marines and a desperate mission to a Japanese-held island during the early days of World War II."--jacket.

Kirkus review
"Adam Land, Lieutenant (j.g.), a twenty-year-old naval aviator, dies at the end of a completed mission in 1943. Leading an escape from a mine-damaged submarine, the young surf-riding pilot and three marines complete reconnaissance of a Japanese-held island and smuggle their information back to Samoa by capturing an enemy plane. The story is raw, realistically related and tells of the reeking, stinking war faced with heroism and humor by the four men, Adam, Jason, Guns and the Rebel. The author served with the Pacific fleet and ranked as a Lt. Commander. He writes with authority and skill. An earlier book, Up Periscope was made into a motion picture. this novel, too, has visual dramatic qualities which may interest the filmmakers. Report complete in these pages."
Pub Date: Aug. 28th, 1964
