80s Fantasy About Soul-Sucking, Sword-wielding Judge

I have a library patron who is looking for a book he once read. He thinks it was written in the 80s, and it was set in a knights/swords/medieval type setting. The main character was a sort of police/judge character who could suck the souls of victims with the palm of his hand. He remembers the cover having a triangle with a circle in it. The lead character thinks his girlfriend has died, but she hasn't really.

Not much to go on - but any help would be appreciated!

I know it isn't right, but I keep thinking of the Elric collection The Stealer of Souls mainly because of the title, time frame and cover description.
