Hi all,

I have such good luck here, I'm going to try again with another book. I read this in the late 70's/early 80's. I don't remember much of the main plot, but I do remember it was about a family that is poor. They have a daughter who is tired or ashamed of wearing the homemade sweaters her mother knits out of army surplus yarn. She hates the drab green color. She tries to dye her sweater, but it looks even worse. And I think from the same book, she sees what she thinks is a strange man sitting on their porch, and it takes her a moment to realize it's her father because she'd never seen him without a beard, and he'd just shaven it all off.

Anybody have a clue?

Found it! I shouldn't have given up so quickly.

Teacher's Pet by Miska Miles.

"Ten-year-old Lottie is miserable in her new school. The girls laughed when Clara the cat followed Lottie to school, and called her "Teacher's Pet" when she brought a jar of jam. Most of all she hates her sweater, knitted from Army surplus yarn."

I'll have to read it again to see if the the bearded dad is part of this one.
