Do you have any recommendations for introductory books that include an explanation of Jung's theory of the unconscious and symbolism?

I have Jung For Beginners 1992 which is a very good overall taster, but I would like something a little more focused and in-depth.

Thanks in anticipation

For books by Jung, I'd recommend Modern Man in Search of a Soul (the cover states it "is the basic introduction to the though" of Jung). Also, The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious.

For an intro to Jung that attempts to unify his thinking, you might try Jung's Map of the Soul by Murray Stein.

I had a fairly good introductory text in graduate school:

Living with Paradox: An Introduction to Jungian Psychology

If you're truly looking for an *introduction*, the last book Jung put out before his death was Man and His Symbols, intended to be an overview of his ideas for a layperson audience. Jung wrote the introduction, while several of his followers contribute the other chapters. I found it to be quite good.

Although Jung can be a bit long-winded and wandering at times, his writings are still fairly accessible. The Basic Writings of C. G. Jung (Modern Library) is a good inexpensive sampler with excerpts from several of his works.

In the book A guided tour of the collected works of C.G. Jung (I give a short review of it) the author lists the following 6 books that he believes are the best known and most used general introductions to Jung's ideas:

The I and the Not-I by Esther M. Harding
The Psychology of C. G. Jung by Jolande Jacobi
Boundaries of the Soul: The Practice of Jung's Psychology by June Singer
C. G. Jung, his myth in our time by Marie-Luise von Franz
The Symbolic Quest by Edward C. Whitmont
The Inner World of Man by Frances G. Wickes

This is probably too late to help the original poster, but it may be of use to others.
