Loved Of Blood And Honey by Stina Leicht ? Hated it? Seen an interesting article about the book? Felt the book was a victim to superfluous commas? Loved the book, hated the cover?

As I mention in the Zoo City chat post, whenever I finish a current SF&F book, the first thing I do is check if there was a "The Big Idea" post about it on John Scalzi's blog. And look, there's one for Of Blood And Honey

I will confess to being initially very skeptical about this. Most books I've read set in Ireland, but written by US authors leave me cringing. Adding the Fey seemed to be a recipe for disaster. But, possibly because I'm a sucker for punishment, I picked up the ebook anyway. I ended up reading most of it on a 12 hour plane trip.

I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not Northern Irish and wasn't around during the 70's, but it still felt right. (Apart from the first few pages for some reason oh and one conversation in "Irish" that had me wincing.)

Yes, the poor book was scrutinised for inaccuracies by everyone to an almost cruel degree :-D If it had been set in Spain or something the review would just be "That was good! Looking forward to book 2". But because it was set in Ireland, every line was analysed for Oirishness or lazy research.

And the consensus seems to have been.... "Surprisingly good for a non-Irish person!"

Think she'll use that as a pull quote for the cover of book 2? ;-)
